4l80e acting up! Help!

first off fluid is good. When truck is cold it does not want to go into reverse or drive. IT will rev up to the max. Now when it sets for about 20 seconds it will sometimes go into gear. Sometimes i have to crank it back up and it will eventually go into gear. It only does this when it is cold. When u get to driving it is does fine. sometimes when it does go into gear after start up it seem sluggish or like its jumping in and out of neutral and gear. Has me thinking its electrical or park/ neutral safety swich. What do you all think?
O yeah it has also, showed it being in second on the dash cluster. Stayed in this position until i shut it off a few times. Thin it acted like it reset to park like it should show. Puzzled!
Last thing. Does the front speed sensor have to be hooked up? Messed the pig tail up the other day. Speedometer still works correct.

The electronics of the trans have no effect on reverse. Also the front sensor is a turbine speed sensor. If you did a segment swap with an 80 program you will need this sensor. This much I can tell you. Vince

You could unplug all the electonic harnesses, and it still should have reverse. Only gears 1-4 are effected by electronics.

Mine does something similar, but I know it is due to converter drainback. It has to idle for 15-20 seconds for the converter to fill up with fluid again before it will move. It isn't an issue for me though, because I have no intention to drive anywhere on a cold engine...

well i have read that it could be converter drain back too. But it hasnt started doing this until recently. i can park it and let it set for maybe thirty mins and it will do it all over again. Sometimes it acts like it want go into gear leaving some where. Worries me a lil bit. Other than this it seems to shift and drive fine.
The other day i was driving and it stayed stuck in third wouldnt shift into OD. Luckly i wasnt but a few miles from home. I hope the safety switch and pigtail fixes it.

i wired up a new vss pigtail this afternoon. Test drove truck and it performed flawless. Shift alot bettter and i actually think my converter is doing better. Do u think my trans/truck could have been in a limp mode from the sensor not being hooked up?
