Dont really have any ?s yet, just looking for a write up on it. I have never done it before so I guess I just want to make sure I am doing everything right when my new one gets here.

 

2x4 or 4x4? you transplanting a 4l80e or replacing the 60? I take you are talking about your' 2000 right?

 

Yeah, its my 2000. It is a 2x4 and have a built 4L60e on order to put in it.

 

O.K if you would like, I'll start making you a wright up of what I had to do to R/R mine. (minus the 4x4 parts)

 

I'd like a copy of that as well, I have a new 4L60E in the garage waiting to go in.

Just did it on my Tahoe except mine was 4x4. MUCH easier for 4x2.

Minus the 4x4 parts, yours should go something like this.

Remove Battery cable
Drain trans fluid (makes it a little lighter)
Remove rear driveshaft
Remove exhaust Y pipe
Remove Starter
Remove plastic starter guard
Remove vent tube to tranny
Remove shift cable via 2 torx screws accessed from above
Remove electrical connections. Be careful as many have destroyed connector on neutral/reverse locator.
Jack under trans
Remove crossbrace
Lower jack to get access above trans
Remove 3 torque converter-flywheel bolts through access hole where the starter was. They are soft allen bolts...poor choice. I rounded 1 of mine and spend 30 minutes trying to get it out!
Remove all bellhousing bolts and studs. Bear in mind there are 2 alignment studs that fit into 2 holed in the bellhousing. One of studs (2:00) holds the dipstick tube so there is a nut to remove then a stud with a nut. Same for the one at 10:00 as it holds the vent tubes.

This got fun for me at this point. Tranny was siezed to the block and required a sling around the trans to the trailer hitch. Cranked up the tension then rapped around the bellhousing with a hammer until it FINALLY broke free. Hopefully your's is easier. I suggest penetrating oil around the alignment studs.

As you remove the trans be careful you don't let the torque converter fall out as there really isn't much holding it on.
Remove the trans dipstick tube as you pull the trans down.

Done. Reverse to install. I'm hoping I didn't forget anything.
