just want to say..that every time i race a truck with similar mods but a 3:42 instead of my 4:10 i get the jump from a 30 roll of coarse but as soon as i hit 3rd at about 80mph..they come screaming around high in 2nd gear..
and from a 55 roll ill jump out hit 3rd they instantly get beside me and top end is identical

dont know if i should put 26" tires for an even lower gear or just go back to 3:42

 

I like my 3.42 gears.. yea it takes a second to get goin, but it has a nice top end.

 

yeah im startin to miss my 3:42 lol been beat to many times by that 3rd gear bog

 

ITs good for drag racing, but thats about it.
if your in to racing from a roll, then the other gears work good

I actually wish i had 3.23s at times.

 

my 4.8 needed the 4:10 jus to get goin but now the 5.3 goes through gears to quick lol and i think the extra low end torque and high gear ratio would be a good combination

 

this kind of the reason i never put gears in mine
Its the 3rd gear that kills them if you dont have power.
My truck on 3.42s shift into 3rd at 103 with 410s it would shift at 85mph and start to lag

a 410 truck will hit 3rd at 85 where i am still pulling hard till 100 on the 3.42s

 

Get a converter if you want to help the 3rd gear issue...

 

ive shifted mine as high as 126 on the 2-3 shift. 4L80E

 

This. I have 4.56 gears and my truck never stops pulling. I made a pull last weekend to 115. Dont want to go much faster on a stock driveshaft and tires that are only rated to 105mph

 

the only ways to make it pull in 3rd is to have power to do it or over gear it 430 or 456s
