Question 2WD guys with lowered trucks come in.......!!!!!

I have a co-worker that has lowered 2000-01 2WD truck and was told you need to install a shim kit and something else........brain fart!!! The truck has a 2" in the front and 4" in the rear but it sits more like a 3" front and a 6" rear. Oh yeah a camber kit. His front tires are wearing bad on the inside like it has too much negative(pointing outward)toe.....????? He's getting an alignment and new tires tomorrow.

Any insite on this matter would be greatly appreciated!!!!

James

If it's an extended cab he will likely need a carrier bearing relocator kit as well.

His tires are probably wearing bad because he has too much negative CAMBER not toe. It's a common problem with lowered trucks. An alignment should fix that.

The Shims and carrier bearing relocator aren't absolutely necessary, but to put it in perspective, when my truck was lowered, I had such horrible wheel hop that I was cutting 2.1 60' times with a 3600 converter, full bolt ons and cam, 26" drag radials and a 150 shot.

I just put 3" drop springs in my truck about a month ago and still haven't got an alignment yet and my tires have no excessive wear

any alignment shop should be able to fix the neg camber with just a 2" drop. how did he lower it? Springs?

with the rear the pinion shims are a must. I never personally had an issue being lowered 5" with my carrier bearing, but have seen trucks that have to shim it just with shackles... just a case by case thing.

The front of the truck in lowered with 2 inch coils and the rear is 2 inch hanger/2 inch shackles. Oh and its an RCSB so no carrier bearing relocator is necessary.

So the group thought here is that an an alignment should easily fix this right??

Many thanks guys.

An alignment and pinion shims on the rear should have you good to go.

-regarding the front tire wear...
The pre 99 GM 2wd trucks had shims between the upper a-arm and frame to adjust camber out for lowered trucks..The 99 and up trucks use a eccentric washer that adjusts in/out ..I believe Belltech makes a front "camber kit" that comes with bushings/eccentric washers..But like the others have said..with a 2" drop you shouldnt have any issues...

Even tho I'm a 2/4, I never had an alignment done, nor do I have uneven wear. When I have uneven wear, it's the rears...for a different reason.

I verfied pinion angle before & after, and IIRC, it never changed. Did I get lucky ? Maybe. Should I have done an alignment even tho no abnormal wear occurred & it rides fine? Perhaps, but the angle stayed the same & I'm a cheapskate. Does that make it right? It's just what I did.
