Default 2wd to 4wd - options

I WANT a 2000-2005 SCSB 4x4 truck. For over 4 years now I have been searching all over the place but finding a SCSB 4x4 truck is turning up to be impossible. They are either on the other side of the country so I can't see it (I won't buy sight unseen) or when I find one it's all rusted out and beat all to hell. So "just sell it and buy a 4x4" isn't a solution. I'VE TRIED!

I've got a 2004 1500 SCSB 2x4 truck. It's an excellent running truck that I've added a e-fan, big 3 core radiator, 145 amp alternator, etc. so it's a solid truck. Full life in AZ so zero rust and damage.

I'm aware that the 1500 and 2500 frames are different, so I'm either forced to do a frame swap/graft or go solid axle. Either of those are within my capability, I'm just trying to figure out which way to go and trying to find some insight on what others have done to correct this problem.

There aren't any solid axles that are 6 lug and compatible with a GMT800 tone ring

If you are willing to swap her rear axle, the AAM 9.25 from an 03+ Dodge has tone rings compatible with GMT800 ABS computers- this is my plan

Whether you decide IFS or SAS, you will need frame mods. A swap to recirculating ball will be needed as well

As your truck is coil spring up front, that actually helps you. If the coil spacing is the same on your frame to the Dodge axle, suspending the truck on the axle is 1/2 solved. Add radius arms and steering and boom.

if you need me to measure coil bucket distances, I can. I have an 08 axle in my garage. It's not for sale, but I can measure anything off it if SAS is your preferred route

As I understand, there are no “1500 4x4” frames as all 4x4s are basically a 2500 frame (front of the frame at least) in order to take the torsion bar setup.

Ultimately I’m happy with my “1500”, I just want it to be 4x4.

To be clear, you are saying use both front and rear axles off an 03+ dodge? The front axle is driver’s side drop right? What’s the spring width and hub width on the dodge axle? I’m guessing I’d need to fab new spring perches on the frame regardless.

I’d love to have IRS, but I’m not sure it’s worth the trouble. My DD is a solid axle Jeep XJ so I’m fully comfortable with a solid front axle (death wobble at 80 doesn’t phase me anymore).

You can use any 8 lug GM rear axle. I have a Hummer H2 9.5" under the back of my rig, for example. I am rocking that SUV life, and the H2 will not fit a leaf sprung pickup without a plasma cutter and a welder: but GM has millions of 9.5, 10.5 and 11.5 offerings that match pickup perch width

Since all the offerings I am mentioning are from AAM, a lot is interchangeable. Most crucially, tone ring counts are the same and GM computers are happy, even with Dodge axles (AAM)

They are so interchangeable the I am putting the OE Eaton E-locker from an H2 into the front Dodge axle, because LEGO's

the axles are wiiiiiide AF. I will make my next post in about 20 mins with some #'s for you. They are driver drop

You will need to sort out the 4L60 tail housing and input shaft, and I suggest a 241 t case. You will need to ground a pin on the ECU when in 4lo to allow the VSS to be accurate and the trans to shift. It's all MPH based shifting logic on these rigs and with a 2.72 inherit reduction in 4lo, it obv gets a little dicey and you are basically perma stuck in 1st unless you tell the ECU to grab the 4lo table

Thats false... The 1500 4x4 and 2500 4x4 frames are different as well as the suspension components.

If you are going to do a SAS any way, then you don't need a 4x4 frame.

I have an 03 rcsb z71 and the only part that makes me think about a different truck is that it's 4x4. I originally wanted a 2wd but couldn't find anything in decent shape close to me that matched. I could be persuaded to trade or sell it depending on the other vehicle.
