I heard about the 5.4 spark plug problem on a radio call-in show. The host has a shop and has pulled heads on about five of the 3v engines to fix plug problems.

I know some people with this engine and have some questions:

Is it just a 3v issue...when did this engine come out?
How many different 5.4 versions are there...2v and 3v?
Is the 3v the 300hp engine?

One guy has an 05,another has an 01 or 02.

Well,I got some info from another thread on here (Dave 1970). I was mainly wondering if it was a problem on the older (2v?) 5.4 too.

 

its only a three valve engine problem

yes its the 3 valve and you dont have to take the heads off to fix it

there is a tool you can buy to remove them we have done 20+ tune ups on these truck and never removed a head just used the tool and the proper spray lube

last one i did all 8 came out with out a problem

there are a couple tsb's out on this issue

 

also all of the tool trucks sell the removal tool for about 100 bucks.

 

Happens on all 2v 4 thread heads as well
