Default Turbo Reliability?

I have a 1999 Silverado LT, Extended cab, 5.3L, with 132,000 miles. I was going to buy a Impreza, to replace my Explorer, but being a college student with no cash, I decided to take advantage of my father's mid-life crisis, and buy his truck off him...

Anyways, I was wondering what your experience has been with your STS kits. Did you personally install it yourself? Did you add anything else to the engine, or is stock? Do any of you live in Massachusetts (Emissoins?)

Let me know anything you guys can! THANKS!

My STS kit has cost me in the neighborhood of 4k and counting and it was used. Make sure you have deep pockets to start unless your ok with 5 psi.

Yeah, I've been doing a lot of research on it, and as cool as a turbo is, it's probably not for me. I'm probably going to go a different route, and just do a stepwise upgrade (i.e. exhaust, headers... other misc. bolt ons...) Unless, of course, I can find an AMAZING price on a kit...

What's up wayland, glad to see you found your way to this site! Hope these guys help you find out which is the best route for you. Personally...I would search the crap out of the search engine on here for STS stuff and bolt-on set up's. You'll find plenty of previous threads about what works and doesn't. And as far as your set-up, realize no matter which way you go, Boosted or N/A, your gonna have to deal with your tranny eventually, and most STS guys from what I've read haven't had any reliability issues except for trannies. I've read a few threads about some boost issues but I believe most of them were resolved quickly. IMO going boosted now will save you money later when you want more HP, cuz trust me you will. Then again I'm biased so I hope you find what works best for you!

I have had my Livernois Turbo set up for 2+ years now and other then the transmission being replaced with a 4L80e Stage-3 transmission (which is expected with the pice-o-crap 4L60e) my Motor has been fine... Any other mods i have done have been purly optional to improve upon the set up. The trick is not pushing a ton of boost and going crazy, i run 7.5lbs of boost and i make plenty of power for a totaly fun Daily driver!

I can't imagine my life or my truck with out a turbo! LoL

3000 for a tranny.... STEEP... It's getting to the point where, if I want power, I should just buy a brand new sport bike... What other drop in transmission setups are there?

Check out 4l65e built by FLT. that might be the ticket for ya, but IMO I vote 4l80e, Put it in and beat the $hit out of it....
You could fint a good used 4l80e for 500 -1000 bucks, plus the parts for the conversion of course....

Sport Bike, plus insurance, plus riding gear (helmet and jacket if you're smart)... More then the cost of a built transmission...

I'll keep my Turbo Truck that can actualy carry stuff, drive in the rain and keep me dry. LoL

I was talking about the whole thing, haha... Transmission & Turbo.... and anything else I'll need, like a lifetime supply of tires... I'll be spending at least 7,000.

Seems like my only option for now is finding a nice exhaust system (so I can hear some V8) swapping out the stereo system (anybody know of any kits to replace the console mounted CD player with just a pocket?) and waiting the 3 or so years until I get the pharmacy degree and a job... If the tranny decides to go bad on me in the 3 years, I'll have to replace it with an upgraded one (hehe).
