Stage 2 Turbo Kit?
#11
On this site you will mainly find Trick Turbo, KB racing, and Huron speed kits. I also looked at On 3, but after investigating them on YouTube, I wanted something more robust that I wouldn't have to fix small issues with. I have the Trick Turbo stage 3 with 3" intercooler, 3" downpipe, VSRacing 78/75 cast turbo, and upgraded Precision 46mm wastegate. I chose Trick Turbo because I liked the intercooler design and the stainless log manifold. The entire hot side is stainless as well. I didn't want to trim headlight brackets or anything like that for cold side piping. Trick Turbo recommended the larger wastegate because I tow and have a 6L. I didn't get the stage 5 kit because I don't race my truck, so I don't need the 3.5" downpipe. When I costed out building a 3" vs 3.5" exhaust all the way out the back, the 3" was a lot cheaper. To save money, I built/welded up my own mandrel bend exhaust and 3" was easier to deal with for a rookie exhaust builder (me). Also with my truck being an 2001, I don't have a ton of room in the front, and a stage 5 kit really shines with a larger intercooler which would require a lot of trimming that I didn't want to do.
Overall I wanted a nice quality kit that will last a long time, issue free, and I got that. I installed the kit in early summer 2020 (needed something to do). I spent close to $9k with the kit, fuel system upgrades, transmission rebuild/upgrade to Jake's stage 4, exhaust, eBoost 2 electronic boost controller, injectors, Innovative Motorsport ECF-1 gauge, etc. The fuel system could have been done a lot cheaper, but I wanted to retain the stock pump and bucket to not have low fuel issues. So I built my own surge tank and plumbed it in parallel with the stock pump to get the combined flow rate. Also replaced all the nylon fuel lines and such. My truck had around 300k miles when I installed the kit, so some of that cost was to replace worn out stuff (like replacing the nylon fuel lines). I laid out the big bucks for Fuel Injector Clinic 1000cc injectors because I wanted well characterized injectors to make tuning easier. Tuning the truck myself with HPTuners is still an on going process and fuel injectors with out data can take a long time to figure out. I like my build, but can see ways to shave at least $1k in cost. If you don't need a trans upgrade and convertor, that is another $2.5k. My 300k mile trans didn't last long under boost.
It's a lot of money and with lower miles you may not have as much cost. With 300k miles I was either going to buy new truck or rebuild my truck and make it fun. After sitting in a $75k brand new truck, $9k seemed a lot better and the new one would have no where near the power.

Give trick a call. Rick will get you exactly what you need. I never understood turning boost up or down when towing. I had a stage 2 then stage 3 and never adjusted my boost for towing empty trailers or loaded ones. I never ever went close to full throttle let alone 3/4 throttle while towing.
take a look at my instal thread too.
