Single or Multi Disk?
#1
Trying to decide whether or not to go with a single or multi disk converter for my 4L80E swap. Right now I'm around 600 rwhp but want to get a converter that is capable of 8-900 rwhp for the future. This is a 100% daily street driven truck (50/50 highway/city). It will never see the track and will never tow. I do haul loads in the bed occasionally, but it's never more than ~600lb. I would like the converter have near stock driveability. Gas mileage is also a concern. The trans has been built up with billet parts so it should be able to handle the abuse.
Is it safe to lock in 2nd gear? From what I'm told, the only reason to get a multi disk is to be able lock at WOT or during towing, not just during cruising. It would be rare for me to be in 3rd at WOT since with my gearing and tires the 2-3 shift won't happen till around 110 mph... a little excessive for my tastes, especially around here.
So if I can't lock in 2nd then there would probably be no point in a multi disk.
Do multi disks offer any other advantages? Reliability? Longevity?
The single disks are also cheaper and a couple pounds lighter from what I can tell.
Right now I'm leaning towards and Circle-D 10.25" single disk, 2500-2700 stall. But maybe 2800-3000 stall would be better to get the turbo spooled if the gas mileage doesn't take a huge hit.

I have a circle D 258MM multi disk 3000. it is pretty tight and could honestly use a 3200-3400 converter. takes less than 2000 rpm to keep up with traffic from red light to red light. before i had the truck retuned, it felt like getting rear ended when the converter locked up at WOT. lol if you arent towing or using WOT lockup, just get the single disk
i had a single disk yank 3600 in my last truck and it was just fine since i didnt lock the coverter at WOT or tow anything heavy

Honestly, if I am unable to safely lock in 2nd with this kind of power then I don't see the point of getting a multi disk for my setup. I would never use the capability to its full potential.

My setup makes a **** ton of torque down low and I kept burning single disc converters, so last time I had the converter tightened up I had them change it to a multidisc. With that said, I never lock it at WOT and with a stock displacement engine you probably wont ever need a multidisc unless you tow a lot or lock at WOT. How the converter couples doesnt have anything to do with the clutches.

I don't have much experience with multi disc converters but in regards to your question about mpg when I installed my 3000 stall I noticed a pretty big decrease in around town milage, Hwy not so much. How do you like your T56 with the turbo? does it take much to build boost in between shifts at WOT?
