Procharger head unit concerns
#1
I bought a used P1sc kit from a friend of mine and am starting to have some concerns. The head unit was serviced by procharger less than 5k miles before he took it off his truck and had all the seals and what not inspected and/or replaced. Upon installing the kit on my truck i drained the oil in the head unit and it was a very silvery grey color, even with under 5k miles on it (procharger recommends changing the oil in them every 6k or so.) Didnt think anything of it and poured in a fresh bottle of oil and didnt think of it again until i got home the other day from tuning. With less than 500 miles on the fresh bottle of oil it was already turning a silvery grey color again and there were 4-5 metal shavings stuck to the end of the dipstick. I tried my best to inspect the rest of the oil when i drained it but most of it ended up on the ground because i couldnt get a cup up under the head unit to catch all of it. Should i be concerned or is this fairly normal? really dont want to have my few thousand dollar investment blow up on me. Thanks for any and al input fellas.

Who did you pick the blower up from?? I never noticed any oil that color, however, with it being fresh, it could just be assembly grease from installing new seals and all. Not sure on the shavings.. I say add more oil, run it a bit more, drain the oil into a coffee filter, then call them to see what they say.. Are you sure this unit is for the trucks's and the oil slinger gear is clocked correct?? Is it making any strange noses?? They all have a clangy metallic sound to them, but you would know if a bearing was going out, by taking the belt odd after the unit is hot, spinning it by hand.. Keep us posted..

yes, the unit is for a truck. i would think with 500 miles on the first oil change after new seals then new oil and another 5k miles or so that with what little miles i put on it on the fresh oil that i put in it shouldnt be changing color so quickly. i plan to run it for a week or so and check it again. im afraid to add more oil to it because it is at the full mark with one full bottle (6 oz)

I didn't me add more, I meant change it again, then fill it back up, drain the oil into a coffee filter. I would def get it hot, take the belt off and spin the pulley by hand to feel for bind or chatter in the bearings..

next time i drain it i will use a coffee filter, i didnt even think to try and strain it out like that to check. guess ill just let the rest of the **** pour onto the ground, its hard as hell to get something in there big enough to catch all the oil

Very simpler, put a small funnel under the drain line, let the plug fall into the funnel if need be. Run a small hose from it to a can of some sort, you will not spill a drop. After that jsut drain what is in the can into the filter.. vuala

I sold him the unit and havnt any problems with it. I had procharger check it out before I installed it on my truck. They said everything looked good on it but did replace some seals. That was March or April of 2010. I really don't understand the metal shavings in it. The smallest pulley that I've run on it was a 3.7 so not a ridiculously high rpm on the unit. Keep me posted Zach I'll make good on it.

I was told that a brand new unit will have small shavings and to change oil early the first few times... but at 5k miles you should only have super fine particles like fuzz on the drain plug. Once you have passed the 5k it shouldn't have anything on the plug. And that's about exactly how mine went. But its still original and never been reopened...
