I was wondering the same thing. Turbos add a ton of heat to the oil.

The first duramax block was redesigned due to low oil temps. Lube galleries in block and heads where decreased .065 smaller. If you gm super diesel builders look up some of this data you can add miles to the brute and save $ on mods.

I use a large Derale cooler up front and most importantly for a street car, a thermostat from Improved Racing to make sure the oil gets up to 180 degrees. The tstat block adapter is a bit pricey but imo if a factory truck has an oil cooler then a turbo truck absolutely needs one. If you've ever driven a C5 Z06 with even a stock motor (they did not come with an oil cooler) and beaten on it you'll see the oil temps rise to the mid 200s real real quick.

Yea, I added one to mine when I first got my turbo stuff going because it was so hot. It maxed out the gauge after a few minutes of just cruising around the block. I use an autometer digital gauge right at the filter area, -8an lines to a 5x11x1.5ish b&m plate cooler in front of the radiator in the corner. 160 degree engine thermostat.

With turbo:
W/o cooler, city - 250+
w/o cooler, hwy - ???
w/ cooler, city - 185
w/ cooler, hwy - 215

Without turbo (stock 195 tstat):
W/o cooler, city - ???
w/o cooler, hwy - ???
w/ cooler, city - 185
w/ cooler, hwy - 185

Run the biggest cooler that you can fit. If you are looking for specific info on any of our coolers, give us a call at 707-544-4761.
