I don't run any connection from my crankcase to my intake manifold. My crankcase vents to the atmosphere. It has a K&N filter as an oil fill cap, a K&N in the hole where the pcv valve was and the other small hole off the passenger valve cover is closed off.

The only issue I have is you can smell it while sitting still.

My truck was the same way just open valve cover vents. And just a breather. After cooking my motor i started talking to my engine builder and he said that is a very bad ideal to not have some sort of a PVC system rather it was the stock set up or even better was to do an aftermarket oil catch can. He said with boost over a matter of time no matter how good you think your motor is built that with boost you will start to get blow by causing access pressure in the motor. He said for sure run a catch can

On a previous turbo car I owned I mounted a pair of those in series to see how much oil the first one was allowing to pass through. The second unit had very little ... about 1/100th of the oil the first one caught in it. I just bought mine from Home Depot because it was cheap and convenient. Because it was a turbo car I also added a check valve on the outlet of the second unit to prevent boost from pressurizing the crankcase.

All in all I don't really know how much a little oil in your intake is taking away if anything. If you were getting a quart every 1000 miles I would be worried but other than keeping it clean I can't see any major benefit of a catch can at all.

Maybe you guys can correct me on that and explain what it is the catch can fixes.

Some of my buddy catch can only get maybe a 1/4 cup of oil every couple of months. But its not only helping with oil it also helps pull access presssure from the motor it really helps on boosted apps. because you are adding extra pressure to the motor from what ever forced induction you choose.

i have no PCV system at all. i just run a vent in my oil cap on the passenger side then i took a spare passenger valve cover and put it backwards on the driverside with a vent in the oil cap. i dont get any oil smell and the filters on the caps are an off white now compaired to the white they were when i bought them.

open vented valve covers make it so there is no way to boost the crank case. it isn't sealed anymore.

Damb forgot to mention mine has a inline valve I got from Mcmaster.com part# 7775K12. It dosent allow manifold boost to blow by into crankcase. So at idle and cruise pcv still works.

What my builder told me is that the intake would pull more with air out of the valve covers relieving more pressure out of the motor. He said they make catch can for a reason same with pvc systems. He said it just cheap insurance. I choose to run one. It never hurt i talked to plenty of tuners and they told me i shouldnt just run air breathers and open vents on the valve cover.
