considering a turbo setup

You don't build a turbo setup around a turbo unless you are planning on running single digit 1/4 mile times. That's just my personal opinion.
On a 5.3L I had originally planned to run a T61 from Precision. However, I'd rather run less boost and make more power with something like an MP T-70.

If the turbo came off of an 03 F250 Powerstroke you probably have a Garrett GTP 38. I have one out in the garage right now. It will most likely be a VVT (variable vane type). From what I have read the VVT of the function will be very difficult to make operational. Most guys are just leaving the vanes in the open position and running them like that. Everyone is going to tell you that the turbo won't work well in your application, and it may not, but if it's free then I say give it a try. That is what I plan to do one of these days. There is a thread on here from a while back of some guys that used one of these powerstroke turbos on a junkyard build and they seemed to be pleased with the performance. The link is below.
