Default Cold weather STS users....

Had the alarm go off full blast for the first time last nite after an unusally long warm up. I was leaving work and it was warmed up almost to operating temp. It was only about 20 degrees out. I'm hoping that the oil in the return line was colder than the oil going in. Stopped right away and checked everything. Started it again and alarm went off after a couple of seconds than stopped. Drove the 62 miles home no smoking but had a little oil in the tailpipes. Is the pump working at idle? Where is the adjustment screw at? I'm also wondering if I should be using 5W30 for the winter months?

i had the same questions about sts (just ordered my kit today )and sent them an e-mail askin about runnin the kit in cold weather and this is what they said

"I have sold quite a few kits in Canada and Alaska .There are some pointers to keep in mind , but the systems have worked well .

1. Run 0w-30 when it is below 32f.

2. Run the oil return pump @ high speed in cold weather ( full 12 volts) there is a toggle switch in your kit .

3. I have seen the turbos completely covered in ice with NO issues. Theses are the same Garrett turbos on sno cats and groomers I used to work on @ the ski resorts.

4.We recommend 5-30 when it is warmer weather ."

This was from one of the sales reps. hope this helps

Good to know. I blew the freeze plug out of my block while in sub-zero temps in the mountains but had no issues with the oil pump. Tells me that the system was well designed, not fool proof but not a thrown together set-up either.

Thanks for the info Switched. I was unaware of the toggle switch for the pump. Where is it located at? Does anybody know if the pump runs when the vehicle is at idle?

Yup, pump runs from the time your key is in the on position. The pump is really loud when it's in the high setting. But you kinda get used to it. You'll definetly hear it from inside the cab. Depends where it was installed but mine is in the engine bay up against the firewall on the driver's side.

Spoolin, looked thru my manuel and did'nt see any switches for the pump but thanks letting me know. I was looking at it today, started it up and no alarm. I'm going to change the oil tomarrow and take it up and wash it. I've got oil all over the back tailgate and rollpan. I'd like to adjust the oil pressure switch. Is it under the black cap?How does it come off and which way do you turn it? Thanks.. Mike

The buzzer is there to let you know that oil is getting backed up behind the pump so you need to address the issue. If you have oil in the exhaust then it got backed up and went past the seals in the turbo. If oil is not going out the exhaust but you are getting the annoying buzzer sound then go ahead and adjust it. Under the rubber boot is a star/allen type slot that you turn clockwise to allow more pressure to collect behind the oil pump before the buzzer goes off.

BTW, the older(first) kits did not have the high/low switch for the oil pump but the new kits do. The kit on my Ram does not have it but the kit I have for the Silverado does.

Ditto with what he said! And I did not know that about the earlier model STS kits, thanks for the info. I thought they all had the Hi/Low switch.
MSD I would get the seals checked out, it'll probably be a pain but seing that your barfing up oil I'd say it's a bigger issue than just adjusting the oil pressure. When you get your oil changed check to see how much you lost.
