Agreed. Imports use restrictors but specifically on Garrett type cartridges which used to include turbonetics, precision, comp, etc....

One of the main reasons i switch to BW was because they run a much larger bearing, which supposedly allows for more oil/flow and they can take a lot more pressure. This evidently also means they need a lot more oil haha.

Looks like the turbine is in ok shape. There is scuffing on the journals but not much. 1/2 thou if that on a few spots. I'm glad I caught it this early. Few more thrashing and it would have been toast.

Going to polish it back up and throw in a rebuild kit.

I ended up ordering 3/8 steel tubing with 6 an connections. I'm also going to hook the feed to the galley plug of the passenger side front of the engine. I'll post some pics of the turbo assembly and my new feed setup.

I'll leave the 10 an return alone for now.

On a side note, I feel like a bit of and idiot. I've been using sandwich adapters for feeds for a number of years and a good friend of mine politely pointed out that most of those are pre-filter. Never occurred to me nor has anyone else ever put two and two together.

The engine I have in the truck is a junk engine from about 6 months ago. Who knows what kind of crap was in it. I guess the rule should be pick up the feed for your turbo after the filter dummy!

Now that I think of it.... is that galley plug on the block on the passenger side pre filter? Anyone?

That's what I was thinking. Looks like I'll modify the oil cooler bypass cover instead.

Thanks for the diagram!

Turns out that the slop in the shaft is regular.... supposedly there can be like .040" worth of play with the bearings dry.

I think Atomic had his facts straight.

Either way, I slapped in new bearings and I'm working on running -6 feed line. I scrapped the hard line and I'm going to just throw in a soft line.

I bought some 3/8" steel line from summit (summit brand). Talk about crappy. if you try to bend it, the wall will collapse and smash the tube. Tried on 2 different benders.

ain't nobody got time fo dat!

Here's a few links for reference on 480 shaft slop. Guess I should have used my googler before I got all paranoid.

I was gonna say something cuz I though your turbo was fine, but then didn't, lol. I guess I should have. You have to remember, that with turbo bushings, the shaft spins in the bushing and the bushing spins in the housing so it divides the total rpm. There is always a lot of side to side shaft play in them.

Garretts have no where near that kind of shaft play. 20 thousands is insane. I've rebuilt maybe 30 garretts over the years.

The funny things is that both the Bullseye and the local diesel shop didn't mention that after I specifically said the shaft play is 20 thousands.

all turbos have a similar bearing design, these just have an insane amount of play.

I'm glad that I swapped out the bearings. they looked oil starved.

Anyone have any tips in getting a junk yard 4l80? I have a little $$ and want to get the ball rolling.

I've been checking occasionally on car-part.com and they all seem to be around 800-900 in Central FL.

It seems like i always hear about people picking them up for 300-400. I always feel like that guy that pays way too much lol.
