Default Couple of Hemi questions

I am thinking of buying a rcsb SLT Hemi Ram. Can you get a limited slip or something in this truck? if not, I don't really want it. I don't need any one-wheel burnouts, got enough of that with the Dakota I had. My second question is about the transmissions with the Hemi engine. I've been told (by Chevy guys) that the trannies fail VERY soon (like every 50,000 mi.) and can not hold up to any real modifications to the engine. How does this tranny hold up to power adders like nitrous or a supercharger? Thanks

I'm not sure about the trannies but I haven't heard of many blowing early. DC really has alot of torque management so the trans shifts soft and slow. The first mod should be a Superchips tuner, the trans shifts like it should with one, it'll even chirp 2nd gear at WOT. As far as the limited slip rearend, yes, you can get one. DC calls it an "anti-spin" rear end. I made the mistake of not checking my truck when I got it, since it had the Big Horn package, Hemi and 3.92 gears, the KBB website said it came with the LS rear. Well, it didn't and traction is a bitch! I have to baby it off the line so bad that mods really don't help my times because all I do it spin. I normally don't do a burn out but I decided to see how much I could spin when I wanted to. I touched the brake and hit the gas, instant spin. The truck just sat the spinning the tire and the tach went up to about 5K, I let up some to get rolling with the tire spinning the whole time. The trans shifted into 2nd, the tire kept spinning, spinning and spinning. I probably left a 100' burn out, honestly. So, the reason for this story. DON'T buy a Hemi Ram without the Anti-Spin rear end.

the problem with the trannys is the OD clutches, they will go out first. The transgo shift kit and reprogramming kit will replace the parts that fail first. I have 52,000 miles on my truck and my tranny is fine. Check this website for more detahttp://www.transmissionsone.com/45rfe_performance_parts_from_pat.htmils.

LMAO, Ford and Chevy guys tell me the same thing about my tranny. Making 500rwtq, I just drove it to the tranny shop for a bigtime build up at 110k and got it built back up.

Yep, 50k, that's it..... LOL

in my opinion, the motor and tranny in the hemi trucks is a great design. the only problem i had with mine was a exhaust valve prob that was fixed under warrenty. i have 49000 miles on my truck and i put every one on it. i drive the truck like i stole it everytime i get in it and it is holding up very well.

the newer rams come with the one-tire-fryer witch is easily changed. luckly mine is a 03 and it came with the posi from the factory.

You can still order a Posi and up to a 3.92 gear can you not?

Funny on the tranny "life", ask the GM guys how many 4L60E trannies have puked their guts out after a CAI or programmer. Yes, there have been some failures with the 545RE, mostly on N2O vehicles tho. A few F/I guys are rebuilding the O/D bands too.
Yes the posi or limited slip is an option on the older trucks. To be sure get both rear wheels off the ground and rotate one. If the other tire rotates the same direction you got posi. If it rotates the opposite way, peg leg.
One note, there are quite a few failures of the clutches in the rear end. Get it checked first before buying as they are under warranty from the dealer if so.

Without trying to sound like an ***.... for a truck that big and a 4x4 your biggest torque gain is going to be forced induction.... but you have few choices at the moment.. How much $$$ were you going to put into this effort and what use is it going to see?
