Default 6.1L cam and springs installed!

Got the truck back on Wednesday. The cam was easy to go in, but the springs were difficult. My install guy had some trouble with them, had to remove a few extra things to get in at the back ones. Outside of that it was slow and steady.

The check engine light was telling me my #2 Coil Pack wasn't working right. The truck ran just fine. I pulled the boots and reseated them and the engine light went off after another day of driving on the engine.

Started up the truck for the first time noticed the exhaust note was a little deeper and growlly, an ever so slight lope at 500rpm's but smooth any higher. It's that way all the way through, meaner.

The butt dyno was giving mixed results at first. The computer need 3-4 days to really learn the cam. It felt like I wasn't getting any gains for the first few drives but now it's settling really nice. Not to much in the way of gains off the line but as it gets into the 2000-2500rpm mark the cam wakes up. The power is smooth and solid all the way through to 6200rpms. I'd say it would make good power at least till 6500. It's been the best kick in the pants mod so far, better then the headers were and much better then the programmer and CAI together. The cam is probably helping all those other mods make more power too. An E-fan, Underdrive Pulley, a and decent torque converter would make this a really powerful combo.

This is a good cam for keeping year round drivability with decent low end and great high end. I can only imagine how the KRC and Comp cams are. The 218 sounds really nice. Another thing is my milage actually seems to be near 2 mpg better then it was before, really odd, I've never seen my truck do 21.4mpg cruising at 65, was 18mpg at best before.

Heh, had some trouble getting the cam specs between the 5.7 and the 6.1, here's what I got.

5.7L CAM

Intake:
Opens at 7.0 deg BTDC
Closes at 253.0 deg ATDC

Exhaust:
Opens at 233 deg BTDC
Closes at 27 deg ATDC
Duration 253.70°

.472"/.460" lift int/exh

6.1L Cam

Intake:
Open at 15.0 deg BTDC
Close at 268.0 deg ATDC
Duration 283.0 deg

Exhaust:
Open at 251.0 deg BTDC
Close at 35.0 deg ATDC
Duration 286.0 deg

.570"/.550" lift int/exh

The 6.1L cam is still tame compared to what KRC and Comp is offering, but this works with the stock computer and doesn't throw any codes.

Most people with my mods and the cam are seeing 320-340rwhp and 340-360rwtq. Just need my programmer back and I'll do a dyno to see where I sit. But I'd guess right around 320rwhp.

Sweet, glad to hear from another satisfied customer.
BTW my replacement heads are due back from the machine shop ( 3 angle, port cleanup ) next Friday. I should have time to install everything before leaving again. Springs, Ti retainers, pushrods, and the 6.1L cam. I will bump up the rev limiter and hit the street. With the TC and head stuff it should really move off the line and into the meatier mid-top now. Can't wait!

I ordered my 6.1 cam today! I'm gonna use Manley springs, titanium retainers, forged pushrods.

I was looking at a post in another site. Seems there are 2 different 6.1L cams floating around. The latest, with the part number ending in AC, has a slightly different duration and LSA. It will really scream in the mid-top end, one guy dynoed a 50hp increase! Here is the post:

Ok on a previous run on the cam doctor a couple of months ago I got 0.521"/0.521" lift int and exh and 201/205 degrees duration at 0.050" lift with a 117 deg LSA for the AB suffix cam this time I got 0.521/0.521" lift and 205/211 deg duration at 0.050" lift with a 116 LSA. A little different but pretty close. I got 0.540"/0.528" lift and 208/211 duration with a 114 degree LSA on the AC suffix cam. So the AC cam is a bit bigger.

And another:

Wow, that is quite a bit bigger, glad I got the AC cam when I did, this thing pulls like a raped ape and also probably explains why I personaly felt like I lost a little low end with the 6.1 cam when others felt that they had not and also explains why with the 6.1 cam, long tubes, cut outs, underdrive pulley and e-fan I was able to gain 53 hp to the tires on a short pull( dyno stopped at 5400 rpm's because the computer was shifting me in to 4th gear)!!

Great info....
