Default 4L80 trans upshift question

My question is in regards as to what goes on when a 4L80E automatically upshifts to 2nd when you have it in manual first. It is a VERY rough (as in tire chirping) upshift (my guess would be the fact that it has the rear band applied in manual first and then applies the front band when slamming in to manual 2nd).

Two questions:
1) What are the qualifications for it to automatically upshift even in a manual selection? I notice that sometimes it will slam the limiter, sometimes it will slide in to manual second (if at low throttle positions) or hit hard into it if you go WOT, let off for a sec, and then get back in it.
2) Is my theory correct on the bands, which I stated above?

i see in your sig that its a "built" 80E... who built it?
my stocker with a Transgo HD2 and my FLT Lvl 4 4l80e stay in the gear i select.

I have no clue about the insides of a automatic tho, call up a sponsor and they can give you exact details.. FLT or PerformaBuilt.

Thanks man. I actually built this hoss myself a little over a year ago. I installed a TransGo HD2 reprogramming kit and was under the impression that it would allow it to hold any gear manually (and also allow you to manually downshift regardless of speed). Apparently not. I followed the instructions to a T and the trans is a real monster other than this situation, just a minor question I was wondering about. Maybe Vince@FLT will chime in on this thread.

There are no band applies in an 80e for shifts. Well that's what I've read anyway. All shifts are done with clutch packs only.

You're correct, KySilverado. For automatic shifts its all clutch-to-clutch awesomeness (unlike bobo 700's or 4l60's haha). The bands are there for either backing up in reverse (Rear band applied + Directs applied) or manual first (rear band applied + fwd clutches) or manual second (intermediates and front band).

So whenever you pull it out of drive and put it in either manual 1 or manual 2, you're using a band of some sort, be it front or rear.
