I'm open to suggestions for sure, the two savage models I like aren't available in 300rum or 338rum.

My dad has pretty much all of them but they're all factory remingtons, 300wm, 300rum, 300wsm, 338rum, they all shoot great. We both shoot 300wsm for big country, its such a fast round with relatively low recoil. But the farthest I've shot it is 700 and obviously there's a big difference between that and 1000+.

I don't want to go elk hunting next year and the big one be out of reach is what I'm afraid of. It costs so damn much to go big country hunting these days I want to make it count and that's what this gun will be for.

 

Look into a 7wsm. I love that round. I shoot a 160 nosler accubond push with retumbo and it is a fun rifle out to 1000 yards.

 

300wsm will do everything a 300WM will do.

Which for range time Id probably need to swap out to a bull barrel to get rid of the taper barrel. And go with a different stock.

Savage seems to have a pretty good aftermarket following but not as good as the R700s. Dont know which way to go.

I dont plan on getting real damn crazy with this gun, just a trued bolt face, fluted bolt with tack ****, nice stock, and a good barrel. From what Ive read thats about as good as it gets without going full custom and spending multiple thousands of dollars.

As far as glass, Ill probably get a Viper PST. I just dont see the difference being there for a nightforce to warrant the extra grand. My dad has a couple od ziess and swarovskis that are badass but not worth the money IMO.

They are all a decent amount more expensive than a Savage depending on what youre looking at. The last one I really like but its friggin expensive for a gun that Im going to tear apart little by little.

You might also consider something in 7STW. Loaded to the older standards of 65k PSI it will run neck and neck with 7RUM, or better, without the super high price tag. Brass costs around 300win prices around here as well. Just food for thought.

 

You think a 7WSM or STW will be carrying enough *** behind it at 1000yds to put a humaine hit on a 1000# animal? My dad has an 7STW, havent looked too much into them but from what I rmember its a 8mm case necked down to 7mm?

Also finding semi budget rifles in those calibers seems a bit difficult. Im totally new to reloading and extra long range shooting, thats why Ive gravitated towards the 300WM due to the vast selection and tons of info on loads for them everywhere.

Most of our shots are between 300-700 yards but if big boy walks out across the canyon lead will be flying.

 

The guys who build my guns , Dixie precision rifles, have a video of a 1325 yard kill on a deer with 180 bergers out of a 7wsm. That is one beast gun. I haven't even shot mine all that much yet

 

Not certain about the 7WSM but the 7STW with the right load has 1400 ft-lbs of energy at 1000 utilizing the Berger 180gr hunting bullet and a stiff load of US869. I've always gone by the rule of 800ft-lbs of energy is the minimum to make a humane kill. Just remember, bullet selection and shot placement are key. Though in case you were wondering, the 300wm will put down about 200ft-lbs more at that distance. Btw all of this data has been with my handloads for where I live. 6000ft above sea level. You may not get the same results. However, if putting a whoopin on something at great distance is your goal, but you don't care to experiment with lighter calibers, well there's always the 338win or 340wby. However, the 300win and wsm will do the trick very nicely.

 

I'm going to go with a 300WM, for someone just getting started like me I think its a good entry gun. Plus nonnie shoots a 300wm and I know I'll be bugging him on the dos and donts of reloading. I just need to figure out if I should go the r700 or savage platform.

Once I learn how to reload well and feel comfortable, one of these will be sitting in my safe

We've also got a matching pair of weatherby 30-378s but they're technically my dads and I don't know how he'd feel about me learning to reload on one of his expensive guns, and brass is friggin expensive.
