Anybody thinking about trying out a 17WSM. They look awful tempting! If the ammo is truly in the same neighborhood on price as 22mag and 17hmr, I may have to bring one home...

ive never liked the 17s..
I shot a guys 17 Remington center fire and that was cool.. but id rathere use a 22LR Subsonic or just go straight to 223.

 

I asked if anyone was gonna buy one. I read that thead, but since there wasn't much too it, and the savage version of the rifle just debuted at SHOT. I thought I'd start a new thread rather then high jack yours. Sorry you can delete this one and I'll post my question in your if you'd like me too.

 

I wont even think about buying one til theyve been out for a couple of years. If the cartridge never gains popularity youre screwed and left with an expensive club. Its not like a centerfire oddball that if it starts to fall out of favor you can buy dies and load up on brass so you can continue to use it. Look at the 5mm and the path the 17HM2 is headed. Some foreign company after 5 years finally started making 5mm ammo again, I dont want to depend on something like that to feed my gun.

It is a nice cartridge for someone who doesnt reload, but for people who reload you can shoot a better round for less like Jonathan said. Originally the cost estimates were 19/50 but now Im seeing its going to be aorund 14/50 which makes it much more likely IMO to suceed. At the 19/50 price point IMO it was destined to fail since it was too close to better centerfire cartridges.

If I didnt already have a 17HMR and this round had been out for a couple of years Id probably buy it. But since Ive got an AR and a 17HMR I have no real use for this cartridge at the moment. Once I fill more of my "wants" int eh firearm department if this thing catches on I might try one.

 

IMHO, that is the kind of thinking is what kills new innovative cartridges. That and rifle companies not building the kinda guns the public wants. If Remington had made more Model 7's with a 20" barrel in 17 fireball and less 700 SPS Varmints with 26" heavy barrels it would have sold like hotcakes. What this country really need is the major manufactures to build a rifle with a well designed micro action. I'm hoping this new round brings that change on. The Fireball, the hornet, even .222, .223, and .204 could benefit from a change like that...

 

I have a 17HMR. I plan on getting a 17Hornet. This serves no real purpose to me. It will die off fairly soon.
