what tuner?

i asked in the engine forum and they recomended tuning to get the most bang for my 4.8. i have my income tax comeing in and i want to know what is the most user friendly tune (one with the most support). i have been recomended the HPTuner and EFILive. i have a 05 chevy 4x4 4.8., what tuners do i need to look into?

What are your mods? Both the tuners you mentioned are great but do require a bit of learning to use, although support for both is great from what i can see.
Your other option is a mail order tune like from Nelson.

it's stock as of now and i want to be able to retune it after a mod instead of having to pay to get it retuned. i have tuning experience with deisel engines so i dont think it would be all that hard if i had enough resources. probally i will first get an intake and exhaust and maybe do some cosmetics. but eventually i would like to get into the motor and do some valvetrain work

Either tuner, EFILive or HPTuners. Of course I recommend HPTuners, but I am biased...
I have 2 4.8 trucks to play with, 5speed and auto! Loads of fun.... Very happy with my HPTuners MPVI Pro purchase too. I recommend the pro version, because you will probably want to interface with a Wideband kit at some point. The regular version doesn't do it, the Pro version does, and it has not one, but 4 analog 0-5v inputs for things like wideband, EGT etc... AND 2 outputs for things like N20 solenoids etc.... Worth the $$$ IMHO.
And it does diesels too, 01-05 Duramax.

What exactly is involved in a mail order tune? I mean, do they just send you the specs for the tune and you still have to buy the program and do it yourself or what?
