OK, so on the dyno the other day, the tuner there and I argued a bit about several different aspects of tuning. It wasn't a hardcore argument, just a fundamental disagreement about how things should be done. The way I like to do it is input settings that I would like to see and calibrate things to achieve those settings. For example, in power/boost enrichment, you input a ratio that drops your commanded AFR down to a number that you would like to run. Say I want to run 11.5:1 in boost, I put the proper ratio in to bring the AFR down and calibrate my VE around it based on error in the resulting wideband reading. The way he wanted to do it was input some arbitrary number in the enrichment table and go hunt for his target AFR by dropping in various values in the VE table and smoothing things out. He also suggested at one point that I change my injector flow settings to make the VE tuning easier, and I just said nooo. That's cheating, and moreover makes other **** much more difficult to tune for. He's been tuning for years and owns his own dyno, yet he thought that was perfectly acceptable.
What are some opinions on this? He's not the first experienced tuner I've seen doing this, and judging from how he approached it, he didn't just suggest it for my truck for the sake of quick and easy tuning, he does it on his personal vehicles too. He was a really cool guy, it just seems like he's one of many who has fallen into some 'quick and easy' tuning norm. The right way of doing it should be the only way, IMO.

Don't know the guy but sounds a bit like short cuts and hack tuning IMHO. These kinds of short cuts is what can cause all sorts of drivability issues. If you've got the powerful software their such as Hptuners or EFI live with access to many many tables and parameters why not do things the right way!
The whole scaling the injector flow rate table to correct fueling errors I am very against this idea and always will be. However I do applaud Diablosport for at least giving an option with a handheld unit with the injector scaling technique so guys can work the fuel trims back in line. But if somebody has the software with the full compliment of tables then take the time and do it correctly.

Yeah, I say do it the right way like you want to. The only time I would suggest to change injector flow data is if you had the injectors flowed. As far as the performance/boost enrichment, he is creating a lot more work for himself (he must just be used to doing it that way). Especially for a turbo guy. Everyone knows if you own a turbo you will be soon changing the PSI. It is so easy to enter a desired AFR rather than changing the VE table. The funny thing is, most people don't have access to their tune, and they would have no clue that it was hacked.
