Default Hypertech - Buyer Beware

I know most people on this site have gone to custom tuning, but this is for the new guys.

I just found out today (the hard way) that if you buy a Hypertech and your stock tune has been flash updated by a dealer (and doesn't match one of the stock tunes on the Hypertech) you get an error code and can't swap tunes. Hypertech charges $250 to load your updated stock tune to the programmer, which allows you to put the Hypertech tune on. You see, the programmer doesn't actually store your tune on it, it just matches it up with one of the stock tunes preloaded onto it. What a f**king joke. You could buy custom tuning software or a brand new lap top for that much money ($500.) Hypertech should offer this update free for the life of the programmer because you never know if you vehicle has/will be flashed by a dealership with an incompatible update. Also the guy on the phone was an absolute d*** head. He kept dancing around the price, telling me to just send it in and they'll charge it to my card. I finally got him to tell me the $250 number. When I told him that was absurd, he said "You're up a creek." He was also very uneducated about the product. When he asked for the part number, I said "It's either 30003 or 50005" (I get them mixed up for some reason) He got all pissy that he had to see which one was a valid number. Also they don't even have a toll free number, which is a bad sign for a mainstream company such as them. Basically, don't take a chance on a Hypertech when you could potentially have to pay this $250 fee. Just buy custom tuning software.

I would have told hypertech to scew themselves and ordered a mail order tune for less than $250.

Where can you get a mail order tune for less than $250? I'll pass the word on to my friend who got screwed. He's kinda new to performance mods, which is why I'm the one who made the phone call for him.

PCMForLess($250), Texas Speed, Wait4Me(Jesse isn't very high on my list right now, I'd go with one of the others)

And I think there are a few members on here that will do a mail order tune for $250 or less.

werd...with the price of mail order tuning being as low as it is...add in Tuning Suites being as cheap as they are theres very little to be gained by going with hypertech or even a handheld for that matter...at least not yet

I have a wait4me and have never had any trouble with it. It cost $158.05 I know that others on here have had some issues with w4m, but I am not sure what they were or why they had them. I could tell a big difference in the way my truck ran after I installed the pcm and put @100 miles on it.
