Default HPTuners worth it for minor adjustments?

Hey guys, My truck is tuned by Charlie Wheatley, and I love it, dont get me wrong. If I were to find a good deal on a used HP tuners for my make/model/year would it be worth buying to make minor adjustments for myself? Keep in mind that im building up a 408 and plan on spraying a decent size shot on it. I just know its probably a hassle for him as much as I to main back PCM for a minor change here or there, and that this would save much time all around.

If it is worth buying, what would be a reasonable cost for a copy, considering I would only be doing a minor change here or there when needed?

sure it's worth it if you plan on doing big things. Even if the big turn into just small maintenance changes here and there. IMO, anybody who goes to a 408 should invest in some software, if anything to at least do emails with your tuner.

He's right. I got my EFI Live on here for a super good deal($250). At the time I hadn't planned on doing anything to my truck other than the usualy intake and exhaust. Overtime your plans will most likely change. I know mine did as I put a cam in my truck a while back and full bolt ons and maybe a 6.0 are coming as well.

For minor changes like i'd be doing, would any of the tunign softwares work? They all are reverse compatable right? like, I can still use efi live even if charlie tuned it with hp tuners?

As long as no custom os's have been used you can use either software to make changes to your tune.

Awesome. Thanks! I think i'll start looking for a copy here and on ls1 tech then. I always wanted to learn a little more about tuning, and I have a spare PCM learned to my truck, so I can tinker all I want if I had the software.

If I were to buy one, what is the easiest to get ahold of that dosent require a new license every time I tune a diff vin#? I dont want to buy the software then have to pay another 100$ just to use it on my truck.

you just need to make sure hptuners has at least 2 credits left which would be enough to license your truck.

Exactly why I might do it. My truck is tuned by Charlie and I am only an hour away, but still would be nice for the little things.

If you were to purchase a used HP tuners, how would you determine that it still has enough "credits" to tune another ECM? How many credits does a liscence come with new? Can you pull the tune out of an ECM and recover credits?
