Question Help wanted, I have a question about an electric fan install.

I plan on installing electric fans in my 2000 Silverado finally. I have a Nelson's wiring harness to go with a custom shroud and fan assembly I purchased years ago. I also installed a double pole switch to manually turn both fans on whenever needed, i.e. cool down at the track. With the main cooling fan being activated via ground by the PCM, I don't see an issue with manually grounding out that circuit with my switch whether the ignition is on or off. With the A/C fan being activated positively with the A/C clutch relay wire, will I be creating a problem for my A/C clutch by positively jumping that circuit with my switch? I don't think I would have an issue with the ignition off, but won't my manual switch engage the A/C clutch when the ignition is on or am I looking at this wrong? I don't want to have any issues with my A/C compressor. Thanks in advance!

Yes, I believe your AC clutch would engage due to the power supplied by your switch back feeding down that wire. However, it wont hurt anything as long as your engine is not running......just make sure you don't do it with your engine running and without your blower motor on....

You could use a 4th relay to control with your switch so that you don't back feed to the AC clutch or you could put a diode in the wire tapped into the AC clutch wire so it does not allow back feed when the switch is engaged....

Yeah, I thought that would happen but wanted to confirm it. I wanted to make sure I was looking at ithis correctly. I like the idea of using a diode. It would be a simple solution to my issue with the manual switch. I am by no means an electrical expert, but I have a decent understanding. How exactly are diodes rated as I have never dealt with them before? Could you recommend what I would need and where I could get it? I’m guessing Radio Shack might be a good place? Thanks for the reply by the way!

Take a read for proper (2003+) A/C control of the electric fans:

What ever you do, make damn sure that fan shuts off with the key!

i have seen way to many vehicles burn to the ground because the owner used a manual or thermal switch on its own circut seperate from the key.
they have a small fire and panic! They forget to turn off that fan! It turbo charges the fire!

Thanks for the advice, but I am well aware of what you are referring to as fire is my profession.

Could use a dbl pole relay.

normal mode, relay is feeding leg A, flip your switch and relay feeds leg B.
Leg A on AC clutch, leg B trips the second fans power relay.
