Default Cold starts in cold temps

Greetings. New here and cannot seem to find answers anywhere else.
2001 2500HD 6.0 auto 4wd 170K on odo.
I bought the truck new and still love it despite the problem. When tempetures are around 32, truck will start right up idle for a second or two then die. Hit the key again, it will fire immediately, idle for a second or two then die again. The colder it is, the worse it gets. If you get the Rs up around 1800 and hold it there for about a full minute, it will idle just fine from there. I've had the truck to the dealer and another mechanic and they don't have a clue since it's not showing any trouble codes. The independent mechanic wanted to just start replacing things. I said OK to service on the air box and or its sensor. No help there. I've had the injectors cleaned.
Anyone out there have a clue to where else I should look?

Thanks in advance,
Dan

I would think possibly the coolant temp sensor, Inlet air temp sensor, and the cheapest and easiest would be to buy some 02 sensor safe air intake cleaner and remove the air inlet tube from the throttle body...it will probably be really black and nasty in there. Do your best to clean the throttle body. Other than that a good mechanic with a scan tool should be able to help you. What state do you live in?

Thanks for the info Dave. I need to get out the books and find the two sensors you are talking about. I'm sure there are good mechanics here in western Colorado, I just hav'ent found them yet. Is the inlet air temp sensor the one they would have looked at when they supposedly serviced the air box?

Cool

The IAT sensor is in the MAF. If you look through the MAF you will see a little bulb and that is it. Is the MAF clean? Do you have an oiled air filter like a K&N? You can clean the MAF with electric contact cleaner without any lube in it. You can clean the throttle plate with that as well or carb or brake cleaner. Those are a couple of simple things you can do yourself to see if it removes the problem. The idle air sensor is on top of the TB and it could be the problem as well but I have no idea of how to test or service it, sorry.

My truck is doing the same thing!!! But I have an ses light on and the code PO300. I have performed most of these things listed to fix the problem but no luck. All of this happend after the converter swap sitting in the driveway while warming up. I can't figure this out. Here is the info on the freeze frame data:
Well I installed my 3rd Fuddle converter last week and still getting ses codes. I barrowed a buddies scan tool and this is what showed up from the freeze data:
DTC that caused the freeze data=PO300
Throttle position=0.0%
Load value=3.9%
RPM=885
Air flow rate=10.21 GR/SEC
Map sensor=35 KPA
Coolant temp=82º
STFT#1=0.0%
LTFT#1=2.3%
STFT#2=0.0%
LTFT#2=1.5%
STFT#3=50.0%
LTFT#3=-18.8%
STFT#4=57.0%
LTFT#4=-3.4%
Vehicle speed=1 MPH
Fuel system=#1 & #2 open

Check it out. I have already posted but this guy is having the same problem to. I took my truck into the dealership and they'er also. They told me that they would have to dive into the engine and see what was going on.

Mort, I was thinking they didn't put the IAT sensor in the MAF till 02 or 03 he has a 01. I may be wrong there though. The IAT sensor should be in the intake tube between the airbox and the throttle body (if it's not part of the MAF).

I have an 02 and don't remember this IAT. There wasn't nothing between the box and the tb.

nope, IAT IS in the MAF(99 and up AFAIK). do as mort says, spray that thing down with a NON-lube electric contact cleaner. ANd the carb cleaner the crap out of your TB especially that little port above the main intake hole. If you aren't getting codes, the maf is probably just unhappy, clean her up.

closet, that's a misc misfire code. You have alot of mods, ask Allen about it, since I see he is in your sig. Allen has tuned for the 80MM TB? converter? 3800, wow? you have a cam?

No cam yet.....or let's say not in the truck yet til I get this stupid misfire code taken care of!! This mis is driving me crazy!!!! Cody and I are going to SA this weekend to see Allen. Everything in my sig was in my truck @ the time of tuning in SA except for the verter. The verter is what caused this misfire ****!! I had the Hughes in without any problems. I know that it is a misfire code but my truck is doing the same thing to the tee as his truck is doing. The cold weather is making it worse to stay running in the garage. I have to start it 2-3 times without giving it gas. When the weather is warmer, the truck will start by itself.

i am just noting you have alot of mods, as in intake as well. If Allen hasn't yet, he made need to dip you airflow at colder levels due to your intake mods. The misfire thing...ugh...I feel your pain.
