I've got a stock bottom lq4 with a small 219/227 .607/.614 112lsa cam with virgin 243 heads, headers, 3200 stall, 4:10 gears and a good dyno tune and ran a 12.4 1/4 et on an 88* day shifting at 6000. My peak power on the dyno was at 6000 so that's where we set the shift points. Although the cam card rates the powerband of my cam all the way to 6800 it only made power to 6000. I believe the stock truck intake and 78mm tb are really choking it down.

Thew a 150shot on it and went 11.6 after pulling a couple degrees of timing
I've always agreed with this theory and that's why I'm only shifting around 6200 with my TR220.

The .4 drop was on a 80* day. First run ran a 14.4@93. Loaded the new tune and went back to the lane and ran a 14.0@ 96. It should be good for 12s in some cold weather.
But after reading this post I want to bump up my shift points and see how it actually does at the track.

I think depending on the cam there is a lot to be had by reving past your peak HP RPM... hell even the stock tune does. Stock tuning shifts 1-2 at 5600 and the peak HP is at 5200. I'm not saying you should go way past it, but just because youre not building MORE hp doesnt mean there isnt anything left in the gear. You're still probably gonna get more pull from the shorter gear ratio than you would from the added torque of the lower RPM and the higher gear. Obviously every cam will behave differently, but I was told mine should peak around 5900 or so, and believe me when I tell you that the differenct between a 6200 shift and a 6450 shift is noticable. I don't think theres much left to gain beyond that though.

A TBSS is a great example of that too... stock LS2 peaks HP well below 6000, I think its still claimed to be as low as 5200 but factory shift points are set to be 6400. AFtermarket cams with the tighter LSA will drop off a lot harder than a factory bump stick does though once its past its peak... but still. Let these things eat!

Been through a few different setups, but I tuned the shifts into 6500rpms. It started falling off above that. 6500 ROMs did me well on my setup.

preciate the info. I mistakenly purchased and installed an 04 LS6 cam, have the tune set to shift @ 5800 and I'm nowhere into the cam @ that point.
