Default bad o2 sensor?

my truck is due for emissions and i can't pass while i have a check engine light on...i've pulled the code and it is p0054 which is an oxygen sensor bank 1 sensor 2. Everybody i've talked and according to all the forms that is the 02 sensor after the catalytic converter...so my question is should i try to replace that one sensor since i'm only getting the one code or is the only way to fix it to have both rear sensors turned off in a tune?...im want to get a custom tune, but im strapped for cash right now because of my stereo build...and i do have longtube headers, and i didnt have the code when i bought the truck in november 2011..it started showing up around jan 2012.

any help is appreciated, because I already failed once and i cant fail a second time or my vin gets locked and some other B.S. happens.

sorry to any one who is reading this again...i posted it on gmfullsize earlier..i just need answers before sep. 5th

Do you still have catalytic converters on your truck? If so, I would replace the one O2 sensor and see if that will make your SES light go out. One O2 sensor is a lot cheaper that paying any tickets for not having an emissions sticker.

yeh, it could be a bad sensor. Replacing it yourself will only cost ya 60 bucks.

If the code comes back, that sensor's job is to monitor the catalytic converter so it could very well be telling you the converter isn't doing its job.

That code is Heater "resistance" Bank 1 Sensor 2. Be sure your wires aren't pinched or burnt. But resistance may be the heater in it is taking too much resistance to work. Crud on it, tons of reasons. And a replacement sensor may work.

I don't know if you get a "OBDII plug in test" in Arizona but just because the code goes away doesn't mean you will pass, you still need to get all your drive (or most) cycles to be complete (drive cycle link).
