I was helping a friend pull a crank pulley off a BMW in the car last year and his 1200ft-lb impact with oversized air hoses wouldn't pull it off. Tried cranking it over with a breaker bar against the frame to use the starter to break the bolt loose....nothing. Showed him the belt trick...between two of us pulling on a 5 foot breaker bar, that bitch came off.

I'm a big ***** when it comes to putting that much force on a breaker bar. I'm always afraid its going to slip off the bolt and make me rip my taint.

lol, that's my torque spec on crank bolts. to hell with all of that degree crap. i seat it with the crank pulley tool, tighten it as tight as i can with an impact then put a breaker bar on with the longest cheater i can find and dont stop torquing until my taint rips.

I have used a chain through crank pulley and around the frame with a nut and bolt to remove and torque crank bolt.

I have used the belt trick and it works real well. (Actually learned it from this site ) I usually use an impact though. Once I had my bolt loosen up even with threadlocker.

Even on an engine stand, shouldn't a powerful enuff impact get it loose?!?

It's how it did cause it was on the truck. I know u said stand.
But 1 of these days I might need to build a "more" stout LS motor.

As I know of the belt trick, it's in my mental arsenal if I need it. Hopefully when I do a motor, it'll be in car so I can break crank bolt loose, then pull motor.

Yet another reason not to buy a BMW. :

We need a no import smilie. Heck, maybe a non-GM smilie.

1200 ft lbs.?!?

Then it wasn't that day Jake.
