If they have "probable cause" they do not need a warrant. "probable cause" is a very gray area as well, meaning in court it's your word against the cops as to what is "probable cause". If for instance you are throwing a party, officers have no way to determine if you are of age to drink or not, that is until they ask for ID which you ARE NOT required by law to show them. Best thing if you intend to have a party is not to make it to where the cops get called and go on you merry way and party down. Check out http://www.flexyourrights.org/index.php some good info.
