actually a 2 x 4 is 1 5/8 x 3 5/8...
this done because wood is rough cut at 2 x 4 and then planned down...
in the old days... wood was ruff cut and used therefore u find ol old homes with real 2x4's

that usually depends on the supplier, Irving ( one of North Americas Biggest Supplier, cuts theres to 1 1/2 x 3 1/2, but you are right abou tthe wood being planned down from 2x4
