Registration/titles crossing border?
#11
That sounds so familiar... I'm on a engineering snowmobile team at college and I ran into that. Comming back from canada into the US we were stopped at the border. We were told to pull over and they were going to search the trailer. After 1/2 an hour of waiting they just sat there in their booths and didn't come over to us. I'm normally a quiet, shy, reserved guy so I approached one of the booths and asked them why they detained us. What I got for an answer was some hot headed remark like go back to your truck and sit and wait, no explination. I never screamed at him.. but my tone significantly changed after that remark. I dangled the keys at hims saying its my damn trailer and you aren't getting in unless you tell me why and how it was **** poor that he wouldn't even tell us why we were being detained. I guess I became so angry that other officers all came over too me and one pulled me aside to explain to me why we were pulled over. They wanted registrations on the sleds before they were to let us back into the state. The sleds weren't registed because they were the universities sleds, so he said then he needed to get a serial number. With the second officer telling me this i immediatly calmed down and said well I'll let you right in and get the info you need. After they got the numbers off the sled they went inside to run them. They still were reluctant to let us through but it was a university truck, we all had university team jackets on, and both sleds were obviously lettered/numbered up with our universites name on them. They questioned us for about another 5 mins then they let us back in. The guys I was with in the truck were shocked at my actions, because I don't think they knew i had a angry bone in my body. I was just very angry at the arogance of the first border patrol officer.
So back to your topic.. its a pain to cross borders with sleds. If it was me I would try to help him out. Yes he should have checked on the sticky details, but I'd still feel obligaged to help him out. Perhaps make him pay for the titles, but try to help out with the effort

Funny I called the DMV and the lady on the other end was like...ummmm these sleds don't even exist sweetie, I think you've been tricked! Lol
Kinda regret selling them to a guy across the border but I know more about regulations than I used to.
One thing I haven't figured out though is can a canadian citizen register a vehicle in the US or do you have to be a US citizen to do so? I was gonna ask him to register the vehicles in the us himself and get the titles then go across the border but figured it's easier to do it this way.

WOW, yeah thanks man that's kinda the same issue but just going the other way around. I spoke with him today and told him to send me back the MSO's and I would take them to the DMV and get proper titles and send them back to him. Trailer he can get himself but I told him I'd get that for him as well since I was doing it anyways.

I dunno, but I swear a american citizen can register as sled in canada. I have some friends that live just inside the US border and I coulda sworn the register the sleds over there.
