Default Outcome of fight with a Screw Driver

Before anybody tells me how much of an Idiot I am..
Know this...
I allready know!

Story goes like this..
Buddy of mine calls me up yesterday evening, Says he is having problems getting his carrier bearing off of his drive shaft...
I tell him no problem I will be over in a few minutes..
Get over there, and precede to lend a helping hand..
( at this point buddy offers to lend me a pair of extra safety glasses..
I decline....
IDIOT!!)
Buddy and I come to the conclusion the Carrier bearing is seized up on the drive shaft.. he goes inside for a minute, and I get the bright idea to use a screw driver to try and pry it off...

End results...
an ambulance ride, and a ride in the Life Flight Helicopter...
and also a 7 hour stay in the trauma unit of Herman Hospital in town..
they released me about 2AM this morning...

the point of this post is to warn you guys,
If you are going to be working on anything, it's a good idea to wear some safety glesses..
or you could wind up with something like this..

I was VERY lucky I didnt do any more damage to my eye than some bruising of the eye it's self and the eye socket..
the handle hit me square in the eye, and didn't hit any bone..
vision is a bit blurry right now, but the doctor said it would eventually clear up.. and that the blood will go away in a few weeks..

I am one lucky guy...
I really thought I had really screwwed things up,
only thing I could think about ( when I came out of shock) was..
am I going to be able to watch my little girl grow up??????

think about it....
stay safe guys, learn from my mistake...

Daniel

DAMN!
lucky ***!
That sucks. But like you said, could have been a lot worse.
My brother was prying with a screwdriver once and stabbed himself between the eyes with it when it poped loose. That was close but funny. he still has a scar.

Glad you're OK. I'll second that notion on always wearing safety glasses. I was grinding on some metal once and had a small piece find its way to my eye. All I can say is that it's kind of scary watching a doctor come at your eye with metal tweezers to pull it out. Just remember, some safety glasses may not look "cool", but neither is not having use of both eyes.

damn man, thank god thats all that happened. My learning lesson wasnt as potentially severe, but I got pretty close to the worst possible outcome. Decided to pick up my 6.0 motor out of my truck and ruptured and shredded my proximal bicep tendon. Now my new motor, turbo, trans, and big brake upgrade will sit in the garage for the next 3 months while I recover. I wont be able to compete in the Southern States bodybuilding comp, and I will have to interview for my new job (my dept is shutting down) with my right arm strapped to my waist under a 4X shirt.

Ouch man that sucks bigtime! I did something similar with a pair of needle nose pliers..I was pulling on rubber piece that holds the windshield on one of our snowmobiles and...well, it slipped and I stabbed myself just below my eyebrow but luckily all I got was a headache, a very bloody cut, and a bruised ego.

Damn, that really sucks!!! Glad you're ok though! I once burned my eyelashes while brazing, that was enough to scare me. Although, I still have a bad habit of not wearing my safety glasses!!! Seeing your pics will make me think twice about not wearing them.

What's bad is it takes something like this to think about wearing safety glasses. Even then, when you come on here and show people what could happen, they still don't listen.

I've been there too my friend, not once, but twice. I swear my eyes are magnets. If you have ever had to get something DUG out of your eye, you will remember the safety glasses. First off ... until they actually get the particles out, it's itching and burning like a SOB. Once you get to the doctor, he drops some numbing drops in your eye and you think it's gone. THEN the fun starts. He gets this little miniature dremel looking thing out and grinds on your eye with a very fine diamond polishing wheel. The whole time you must stare into the light and not move a muscle keeping your eye WIDE open or he could slip and really mess up your eye. Once all that's done and the drops wear off, your eye begins to water like you left the faucet on. For the next 3 days you must put an equivelant of Neosporin for eyes IN your eye, under each eye lid every 4 hours. After the 3 days, for the following week and a half, you must do this every 6 hours. Up until 3 weeks you are to avoid ALL and ANY dust of any kind that could possibly get in your eye.

THAT will also make you a believer in eye protection.

Sorry to hear about your accident. I hope you come out OK. Let us know if theres anything you need.
