they could still be using the wrong oil for their application. On lawnmowers I usually recommend non detergent 30 weight

The worst one I came across was askin for a relay for my nitrous kit which I took, kid asked me what make and year. I laughed and told him just find the the relay, look up the part number and he said he couldnt he needed to know the make model and year. Some people just dont need to be a parts guy plane and simple.
