Default New career? Insurance sales???

I need some advice guys. My current job isn't going so well and Im really considering changing careers. I have always been told that i could sell glasses to a blind man and I am good at selling things. I enjoy working with people and helping them. I put in an application for an insurance sales position with a major company. I got the call from the guy and we set up an interview. I talked to my mom about it and she about chewed my face off thru the phone. She sayd people are too broke to buy insurance and I will starve to death trying to get people to buy the insurance. Im worried about it now as I dont want to walk away from my job that pays well and pays my insurance for me and walk into the unknown as a sale agent for something that people may not buy. But with my job going like it is. my "good" checks wont be good much longer.

Help me. Advice

Did you respond with the fact that having insurance is the law, regardless of a person's financial situation? That is, assuming you are talking about auto insurance...

I can tell you that starting your own agency is going to be tough. Especially with the Geicos out there. My agent earned his agency from his father.

Just a suggestion, take a side step and look into the adjustment end of the business. Get your feet wet in the industry first, and if selling auto insurance is what you want to do, then make the step.

most of the time when they talk about selling insurance, its either health or life insurance........ no need to "sell" auto insurance since YOU HAVE TO have it, that's what the marketing is for...

My soon to be husband has been a Merchant Mariner for over 12 years, and yes I agree. The benefits are good, the pay is good, and you get paid full time for 1/2 time worked. And there's the union.

In most cases you'll have to make your was to Piney Point Maryland (that's where Eric went) Understand that being away from home for a little longer than 2wks at a time may happen. Just depends if you want to go open water or local coast or not.

Sorry for not stating above. It is Life, worksite benefits programs, etc. Not auto insurance.

I am going to talk with the guy but I do understand where my mom is coming from and it does make me nervous. Im going to ask the guy if I can first be put on a salary and no commission then after I get my feet wet part salary and part copmmission, then once Im doing good, straight commission and bonuses. My aunt suggested this as she has seen this done when she worked in Insurance in Florida.
