Default new beater(gas miser)

tired of 14mpg(i know it should do a little better) and the job i will be on for the next year is 72miles round trip so i decided to look for a beater that gets ok mileage. this is what i came up with. found it on craigs list for $1500

soo... turns out i kinda like the car. it is fun to drive. it's slow as hell but still fun. it seems to handle well but i am comparing that to a 5000+lb truck. first partial tank of fuel i got 22mpg but i was beating on it prety hard. so far i am up to 350miles on this tank with over 1/4 left on the gauge :clappin:

first things i did were some little stuff like speakers, hood struts and a timing belt. next it needs a tune up. runs a little rough. thinking about squirting it and doing some tuning to max out the mileage. might get a little turbo some day if it keeps running.

my quesitons are, anyone know if this thing would do ok in the snow(not blizard) with the proper tires or is that a waste of time and money? how well would something like this do on a road course? what about auto cross? the car is very smooth and other than the engine running a little rough i would say the rest of the suspension and drivetrain is in decent shape.

the dragweek project is right in front of the 944, you can see the back of it in the garage.

but, you never know. it would be prety hard to make that porshe run into the 12's and thats what it would take for the daily driver class.

sweet car, my dad used to have one like that back when we lived in Texas... like you said it never seemed fast but it was fun to be in when he took it out on a windy road.

im sure you will have it running 12s in no time though LOL

I had a friend who used to drive one in Maryland, it snows there, not like your place. It would do fine in 6" of snow or less, he had winter tires (not snow), just good all seasons and it went fine. He did have a limited slip diff which helped a lot.

i thought it was a good deal too. the entire car is in decent shape, not perfect. after geting it i found out they are not worth a lot of money. seems like this should have been about a $2500-$3000 car so i apear to have got a good deal.

these things are a prety easy ls1 swap. the tranny is in the rear and they make adapters to hook that to an ls1. problem is the rear has prety steep gears. at 75mph it is at 3000rpms. even a little 4.8 would suck some fuel. they make a diferent tranny for the turbo car that isn't soo steep but i bet it would still be at 2500+ down at 75mph. if there was a way to keep it under 2000rpm it would get kick *** mileage.
