Long story short, Im not an idiot when it comes to school, I was 2 years ahead in high school(took senior math/science as a sophmore) but got lazy and just didnt take any more classes since I already had enough to graduate. I thought it sounded like more fun to only have to go to school for 3 hours a day my senior year instead of getting ahead on college courses
Fast-forward 8 years and its time for me to get into the physics, calculus and engineering classes for my degree. I havent cracked a math book in almost a decade and Im rusty to say the least. Ive got to take a placement test so Im not stuck in a rediculous amount of remedial courses, and Id like to brush up on my math so I dont score crappy and ahve to take a bunch of BS courses.
Ive done a some google searches and there is all kinds of stuff out there but was hoping for some direction/recommendation. Thanks

Good luck, you going to ACC? My sister (36 years old) just started taking courses there recently, we were laughing about how stupid it makes you feel to try and learn stuff that we used to know. I have killed too many brain cells to try and start school again, I wish you the best.

Yeah been going there for a while part time, here recently Ive gotten more serious about it and been trying to work less and do more school but its tough with a wife and kid. Ive got some contacts at UT for when Im ready to transfer but I want to get all I can done at ACC since there is only about a 1500 difference in tuition PER class.
Im going in for a double major in Mechanical and Civil Engineering. Its only about a semesters more work to get either degree in addition to the other and both will help my salary substantially
I really wish I wouldve been more diligent in going to school and not taking so long to get back into it, now Im paying for it

I would go to the bookstore and check out the math dep. Read through the different books and find one you like. The only way to practice math and physics is the keep cranking out problems. It sucks, but that's the way it is. I was an engineering major for two years. You may resort to math for dummies, but if it works for you then that's what you need. Good luck!

I hear ya. I'm a year away from retirement, stopped my education when I graduated HS to go make money. I make pretty damn good money now but when I retire nobody wants to hire a guy with no college diploma. Especially in this day and age, I may just put off retirement for a few years. Going to school doesn't sound like much fun anymore, 23 years as a Marine Engineer on ships being the boss. I just don't think I could take much direction. Get it done now before you get any older, hind sight man.

I work at Tarrant County Community College up here in Fort Worth, and just happen to work in the Math Lab. These past few weeks or so I've been working specifically on a site for students just in your position: having to take a placement exam (usually the Accuplacer test) but wanting to either improve their existing score or just brush up on skills to get past developmental classes.
semathlab.wikispaces.com
If you go there, you will see some navigational links on the left. Our Math 302 class is Arithmetic/Pre-Algebra, Math 304 is Beginning Algebra, and Math 350 is Intermediate Algebra. The next class after that is College Algebra, so if you can master the Math 350 material, you should be golden when you take the placement test.
Each 302/304//350 home page has a plethora of practice tests and worked out solutions in .pdf format. They are the actual practice tests we give out during the semesters.
You will also see links for general Accuplacer help and other various reference links that can be incredibly useful. Feel free to click around and utilize the material, but know that the site is still very much a work in progress. If you reach something in error or what not or have a question about anything in your studies, feel free to let me know. It's a collaborative effort with all my other colleagues in the Math Lab, so sometimes I can't keep up with everything they post up, but I try to make an effort.
I'm currently studying for my Master's in Mathematics at the University of Texas at Arlington with plans to become a college prof once I complete the PhD, so this is definitely my area of interest haha.

You can always enroll at a Kumon school. I did it when I was in high school, it's intense repition of problems. It's a proven system that you do maybe 4-5 hours a week. Not sure your time frame but given 3-4 months you'll be way ahead of where you need to be math/algebra wise.
