Took my truck to inspection Friday for the first time in a few years. The inspection ran out 4/09 while the truck was down with the blown trans. I've been getting shift solenoid codes due to the higher stall torque converter, and was waiting to get my updated PCM back from Justin at BlackBear. Anyway, the code had only popped up once, and didn't come back the few times that I took the truck out so I took a chance and gave it a shot. Mom came with me so we could run some errands afterwards. I was a little nervous since the truck is so much louder after gutting the cats, not to mention that I no longer have EGR, and I have clear corners, so there were a few things that I could fail for.
I felt a little better when the inspector commented with "nice truck, sounds real good".
In New Jersey, emissions is just an OBDII plug in, so as long as there's no check engine lt on and no codes, and all of the readiness test monitors have run (you're allowed one to be incomplete), and you pass a visual (cats and all original emissions equipment must be physially there), then you're good to go.
They scrutinized the truck pretty closely, stuck the mirrors underneath, popped the hood and looked around, then it went on to the brakes, suspension, and gas cap test. When it was all done I got a brand spankin new inspection sticker
Man was I relieved.
So mom and I hop in, pull out of the parking lot, get about 100 feet down the road, and the check engine light comes on!
Holy cow...five minutes or 100 feet sooner and I would have failed...finally some good luck. It would have been more like my luck for the light to come on while the truck was being inspected, that would have sucked for sure
I keep a scan tool in the truck these days and it was the same old P0757 code that I've been getting, so I cleared it and down the road I went.
Got the PCM in the mail the other day, just have to pop it in, and hope that it's good for a while. At least now I can cruise around in this loud bitch and not have to worry about getting a ticket for failure to inspect.

Clear corners prolly violate some DOT law, so that's why those could fail ya, right? What the hack could they fail ya on suspension or a gas cap for? Susp. just has to be in a safe order & gas cap present I'd think.
+1 on having your own tuning software is great. And, if u know how to use it.
