I use craftsman sockets/extensions with snap ratchets, they have a much smoother action that I like.

i use mostly proto and channel lock...channel lock tools are hard to beat for the price. quality is better than craftman and they are cheaper from what i see.

i keep one of these in the back seat of my truck at all times. its compact and has enough tools to do just about anything you can think of.
