Most of 'em only know what's in their 'puter. Years ago I went into one to by a new thermostat for my GN. They came from the factory with a 180 stat, but their database was treating like a standard 3.8 with a 195! Yet they actually had a different entry for it...

I guess they just didn't want to stock the lower temp and figured nobody would notice. Caught hell from dad because I wouldn't buy it - when I finally got a correct one, I made him watch while I pulled the original out, handed it to him and had him read me the temp stamped on it.

He doesn't quite question me as much about parts these days...

See that's the thing fellas. I know my way around most trucks, but honestly, I know NOTHING about classic cars or imports. I love learning about everything even if it's a dumb as a starter for a civic. I figure if I get the job I can hopefully help a few people out too and learn a bit too.

But why Autozone... If your surrounded by idiots they might rub off on you and you will actually loose knowledge.

Sorry I only go to AZ as a last resort and even then it doesn't matter cause if they don't have what I need. I used to go shop mostly at O'riley's but I am still looking for a good place around here. The people at my local O'riley's are stupid. I had to ask them about exhaust band clamp 3 times and they didn't know what I was talking about. They even had trouble finding them after I gave them the O'riley's part number. One guy tried to sell me an old round socket style light bulb for my brake lights. I was like that ain't gonna fit in the hole... I always try and have part numbers for what I need before I go in those places anymore.

I tried to get an ISC motor for a tbird a couple of months ago and was told it was a dealer idem only. I told the guy that this could not be true. He then started to tell me I was wrong. At that point I told him that I have been turning wrenches since he was a fetus.....Then left the store!

you guys are harsh...

I worked at Autozone when I was in college....it paid my bills. Yeah, they do have experienced people that know their cars. They also have the people that don't know much about cars. For you guys to stereotype all autozone employees as idiots is a little unreasonable. But hey, I guess I'm a goddamn retard in your book because I worked there

Hey man, you know they aren't saying that. Hell no body has called me a dumbass and I'm talking about working there!!

I think everybody can agree that not everyone there is a dumbass, but there are quite a few and every store seems to have at least one.

I just want to be somebody like you, who actually knows a bit about cars/trucks and can hopefully help a few people out.

I always let them run through their little computer screens. Everything is good right up until they say "4.8L or 5.3L?" I say "6L". You can almost see the fear and confusion sweep over their face.
"Tahoes don't come with a 6L"
I say, "I know"
Then I give them the part number for what I need that I had the whole time in my hand.
I tried to buy a belt one time and it was like a goddamn act of congress to tell the guy the computer will not help you. It's a custom application. Then he proceeds to argue that the belt I am buying wont fit. I thought I was gonna have to take my belt off, whip him and ground him to his room.
There is one smart guy there who remembers me and just asks what I need and doesn't use the computer.

yeah or Pep Boys, they seem to hire from the same gene pool of mentally challenged dickweeds! not meaning you of course Sorry if anyone else works there but the store near me is pathetic... Actually there is one chick at the AZ that's pretty damn smart and efficient, knew exactly what I was looking for and had it from another store by that afternoon I was impressed. But that's the exception certainly not the rule. Good luck dude.

Later...
