Default Is it alright to use engine stand for a transmission?

I have a 4L80e I want to instal a shift kit in. Can i use my engine stand and attach it to the bell-housing or is that a bad idea? I've seen people do it but I just want to make sure its okay so i don't end up with a broken case.

thanks!

That's a lot of weight hangin out there.. If you do it get a 2x4 or 4x4 piece of wood and support the other end.. Should be just fine

sorry to jack the thread, but where can you get one of those bench-mounted tranny stands?

It'll be just fine.

The only thing is, to build a tranny, you need to stand it up on its end. Not gonna work well with an engine stand. If you're just working with the valve body, you're good to go!

FYI, I found a rotating tranny work stand that attaches to an engine stand. its around $230 or so.

I hang them off of engine stands all the time when I'm just doing valvebody stuff. Other than that I've got a table mounted bracket that leaves both ends open. I've put transmissions as big as an Allison or Torqshift on engine stands without an issue.

The tranny is much lighter then the motor. and not much longer. I see no need for a support.
