motor vs maggie (or other F/I)
#1
Guys,
Just looking for some brief opinions on guys who have been around the block.
I've heard mixed comments regarding maggies and high IATs, but yet there are a LOT of guys running very fast times...especially now with the new TVS.
So I ask, motor vs forced induction (specifically for the TBSS rwd and awd).
Cam only vs maggie (or other i.e. turbo, procharger)
Cam and heads vs maggie (or other)
Comparing in say 45*F vs 90*F would the cam/heads have more of an advantage due to the IATs?
Just wanted some opinons. Also curious of different stall RPMs as well. We all know the F/I guys run 2800-3200 ish.
What about sound? A 'bolt on' truck will be louder for daily use no? Does a bolt-on truck have a better longevity--it seems you see a lot of guys with F/I have the bottom end let loose.
Thanks!

Hmmm.....both FI and NA have their pros and cons. FI will let a little 5.3L behave like a 7L with little change to it's normal economy out of boost...meaning with FI you can have big power on demand but the economy of a smaller engine.
To be honest, even in 90*+ heat my suipercharger performs flawlessly (both the 112 and the tvs).

Bolt on power is lots easier than opening up the motor to do cam & heads, and its def best $:rwhp ratio. Real problem is that once u add one or the other, u eventually do both! Then u end up having to do tranny, rr end...etc. If u think u can control urself go blower and leave it at that. Mileage actually improves a bit, power out of the stock mill is amazing, and not much in supporting mods needed unless u decide to do headers and exhaust - but its not essential. Sound will change and get louder, but really only when u get on it. Argueably if u go turbo, u might need to drop compression, but I'm certainly no expert (ask LeftCoast32). I'm definately gonna put a TVS on my TBSS once I get around to it. R/

I've been around the block a few times. lol
The LS2 is a formidable powerplant and there are some fast N/A trailblazers. But from what I've seen, most of them have a really large torque converter, big cams, and aren't that friendly as a daily driver. ** converter size and 'daily driver' comments go along with personal preference, they are different for each person.
For a daily driver, the TVS is just about perfect. Straight out of the box with no other mods, its a great addition. With some more bolt-ons, it gets even better. With the TVS, IATs are no longer an issue. With just a few hand tools, the installation can be completed in a day by one person.
My TBSS is a daily driver. I've got the TVS installed, a set of Kooks, good exhaust, 2800 rpm converter and have a couple more small bolts-ons planned. Its a GREAT combo. Its reliable, its not obnoxiously loud, it drives great in stop and go traffic, and I don't have to worry about it breaking down. The best part - my wife likes to drive it and she wouldn't think its any different than stock. I couldn't say that about some of my previous vehicles.

Hey BigTex,
I think I saw your posts here and on tbssowners...
12.XX with your TVS only right? Who was doing the tune?
Anyhow, thanks for the insight. The TVS is about as attractive as it gets! Beautiful engine bay that's for sure.
Do you think the 2800 is too low? How would your truck fair with a 3200?

Exactly Mike - 12.6 with blower only. I call it showroom stock - full weight and no other mods. It would have been probably a 12.3 if I had good traction.
That was using the stock tune that I got from Magnacharger.
A 3000 or 3200 would probably net me a better ET. I'll know more when I get back to the track. This is my daily driver. If you took it for a drive, you wouldn't know it wasn't stock unless you layed into it. It looks stock, drives like stock, sounds almost stock, but will probably run 11s.
