Exclamation Need help with VIN #

A buddy of mine has an old chevy full size truck sitting in his back yard. He said I could take anything I need for my blazer. I have the vin and was wondering if there is a way to tell what year the truck is or what gears the rear end has. Let me know any info will help.

1978 4wd 1/2 ton pick up with a 350 and a 4bbl. Built in St. Louis. The only way to tell the gear ratio would be to find the RPO plate and decode the codes. My guess would be either 3.07's or 3.73's. Unfortunately, most likely 3.07's...

Correctomundo, I think the G86 was introduced on the Quadrasteer trucks in 2003. It's a true limited slip, whereas the G80 is actually a locker with a clutch engagement that locks due to differences in wheel speed and not torque input like an LSD. Either way, they'll eventually blow up whether off road or at the track!
