Default Differences in identical tire size?

I just had new tires put on my truck, Pathfinder All Terrains, 285/75-16's. They replaced Yokohama Geolandar A/T's of the same size. Problem is, the Pathfinders are about 1/2" narrower tread, and about 1/2" shorter overall than the Yokohama with 50% tread remaining. Is this normal?? Both tires are stated to be the same size, but that's a big difference!! It's like going from a 285 tire to a 275.

I see it all the time.Just depends on the tire maker.Kinda like jeans. You buy a 32 in one brand and 34 in the other or a 30 in the other. At least this has been my experience with tires.

I second that. My BFG 33's were actually 33", while my Goodyear 33's were around 31.5"
