My Stick Welder is a lil ol' Hobart Champion 4500 Generator / Welder.
I've got the same welder, and it's been working well for the past few years.

I have an old Miller Syncrowave 351 TIG with all the bells and whistles and a Millermatic 250MP MIG. I bought both of them new, but I don't weld much anymore. They've both been great machines.

(These pics are not my machines. I don't have any pics of mine, but you get the idea)

Wow, that's a nice machine. 400A max output! Pulsed MIG capabilities with optional Optima control! That's great for sheet metal. Fan-on-demand is great in a home shop. Adaptive Hot Start for Stick is really nice for guys like me who have trouble with 7018 rods sticking on startup. I think you're on the right track. I'm jealous.

Miller Millermatic 250MP MIG, Hobart TigWave 350 TIG, an old *** Lincoln cracker box, Miller Bobcat, an old Snap On MIG and Snap On Plasma. Don't have the time hardly to use any of them anymore but would lose my *** if I sold them.

If you stick with the Big Three (Lincoln, Miller, Hobart) you will be alright. Years of ship work I've used all of them with good results. Good luck.

I'm using a Lincoln precision tig 185. She does great for a hobbiest, but I wish it had a water cooled torch. I have been thinking of rigging one up on it. I'm still on the lookout for a Miller mig in the 175-250 amp range then I would be set.

If money was no object to me, I would get a push/pull Miller system with pulse. That would do about everything I would want to do. I currently have a 385 amp Miller water cooled tig, 140 Hobart MIG, and an 80 amp Miller plasma. The tig is nice, and I would much rather use it, but most stuff like my exhaust doesn't need to be the strongest or look the best. A good MIG is the most useful welder you can get, and in my opinion should be the first one to buy. If you plan on moving it around the shop/garage, make or buy a real good cart for it. If you decide to get a tig, buy the best one you can get because it will more than likely last you a lifetime. Plus when you use it you need the absolute best welds. A plasma cutter is a wonderful thing too. If you buy one, get a good one. I have cut 2" of steel with mine, and wonder how I got along without it. I like Miller.
