Match an amp to these subs?
#1
I'm about to get a hold of a PAIR of these HP10D4's
http://www.orioncaraudio.com/subwoof...b_p_series.asp (2nd column).
they are Dual 4 Ohm Subs rated at 500w rms each sub. What am i looking for to match an amp to this PAIR? (what wattage amp and at what ohms?)
When it says Dual 4 ohm, does that mean 4 ohm's per coil or 4 ohms total (2 per coil)?

It depends on how you want to wire them. With a pair of dual 4 ohm subs you have a number of different wiring options. Dual 4 ohm means two 4 ohm coils.
Each sub can become 8 ohms if you wire the coils in series or 2 ohms if you wire them in parallel.
The combination of both subs can be either 16, 4, or 1 ohm depending on how they are wired.
I personally would wire the two coils on each sub in series, which will give you two 8 ohm subs, then wire the subs in parallel, which will place a 4 ohm load on the amp. Then I would get a 2 channel amp, 1000 watts at 2 ohms, and bridge the amp, which will divide the 4 ohm load over 2 channels, so each channel will see 2 ohms.
A better way to do it would be to get yourself a pair of 2 ohm DVC subs, then wire the coils in series, giving you 4 ohms per sub, then wire the subs in parallel, giving you a total 2 ohm load, and buy yourself a mono 1000w RMS amp.
Either way, make sure to get yourself an amp that at least matches the RMS ratings on the subs. It's easier to kill a sub when underpowering it than overpowering it, because if your amp isn't up to par you will probably turn the gain way up, which will lead to clipping and will damage your subs. Better to buy an overpowered amp and keep the gain turned low.
In my truck I have a 1500W RMS (bench tested at 1650 watts) amp driving two 500 RMS subs. I keep the gain turned down and it sounds great, and doesn't wear the equipment out as fast because it's not working as hard.

If you 2 that are dual 4 ohm, you can wire them them to each one to 2 ohms, WHIC MEANS that you can buy the Audiobahn A8000T or A8000V (same thing). I know Audiobahn, chromed crap, but that amp does amp do put out 800 watts RMS. Benched by Issac. You can get 2 of those amps, I got mine for like $140.

Duh...why don't you just have two 4ohm single coil subs and skip about 4 steps of wiring???

Your right...my bad
I have been out of this stuff for a while.
I used to be realy big into the GOOD stuff back in the mid 90's...like old Hifonics, nakamichi, and linear power.
But I see they have all pretty much sold out.
Although, Steven Mantz is making his own amps again.

I was into it about 3 or 4 years ago, and it's even changed significantly since then. I kind of lost interest after I finished my system, haven't really kept up with it since then. You're right though....most of the stuff out there seems all shiny and flashy but made pretty shitty.
