Default Help me pick a home theatre

Hey guys,
I'm in the market for a home theatre of some kind. I've had the Bose321 system for a looooong time and it finally crapped out. I was never really impressed with it anyway.
So I need a new system. The living room is pretty big so it needs to be a room filling sound. This is the reason I didn't like the Bose. It seemed better suited for a smaller room.
I need the DVD player and speakers. I want a powered sub and 2 speakers, possibly a center channel. If I can avoid having rear speakers I would prefer it but I could mount them on the ceiling.
I don’t know much about this stuff for the house. What are the good brands? I also don’t want to spend a ton so lets say $500 or less. Is that possible?

The TV is a Sony 60” widescreen and says: S-master digital amplifier, Dolby Digital, and SRS True surround on the front.

pff, ditch the 60".. go big like my parents. FULLY custom build wall housing, floor to ceiling. 3 facing speakers.. somethin like 12x6's and 2 rear surround speakers. O yeah, projector with a 92" diaganol screen
go big or go home!
jk, all seriousness we have Klipshe (I think thats it) speakers and they sounds really good and get loud as hell. My living room isnt real long tho too

with newer receivers that are 7.1 and upconvert to high-def (a lot of newer DVD players up convert to high def as well), powered subwoofer, two fronts, a center, and possibly two rear speakers, you will be at least in the 1000 dollar range...IMO and experience. i just put in a newer sound system in my living room and put my 321 system in my bedroom for that smaller room sound as you said

yup. I have a few K in my home theater and I haven't spent a dime on it in 5 years, except for some new surrounds and center.
Good Hi fidelity is going to cost. I have no idea of the new crap but I have a Harmon Karrdon sound system with Pinnacle fronts and 350w 12" sub and Definitive rears and center.
My rears are up in the corners of the room and all the wiring is hidden along the clapboards.

I knew $500 was wishful thinking. What brand are you guys thinking? 7.1 is the latest? I was gonna head to circuit city tomorrow and look, but I know those bozos are gonna tell me what they have is the most superest, bestest money can buy. I wated to get some ideas before I go there (or wherever)

My vote for a reciever is onkyo or yamaha. As far as speakers i had Klipsch towers and center but the towers alone are gonna run you close to $500 ea. new. I think the center was like $350 new. It gets expensive real quick, it just depends on how good you can afford it to sound.

i have a pioneer receiver, infinity 12" sub, a 3-in-1 (center, left, right) infinity front--due to space reasons, two infinity rear speakers, sharp aquos 42" HD LCD...love all of it and it kicks a$$...i just watched transformers in HD on it and love it more everytime i watch something like that...the stereo alone costed me about 1700-ish.

edit: look on the internet for some of these things. then compare pricing at circuit city/best buy...sometimes they baloon them a lot.....

Too many choices. So, Yamaha is a pretty good brand in the home stereo market? HTR or RX-V?
