I've got a bose surround at home and it freakin thumps!!! The system I had before had 2 15" subs and the bose sounds much better. I think auto companys must have leased the bose name or something, because car bose systems just dont cut it IMO. Its all name there.

 

Replace the head unit. The speakers are fine, but the stock head unit is from Delphi (or Delco), not Bose. I pulled mine out within three months of buying my Tahoe and replaced it with an Alpine. It has made all the difference. I then sold my 6 disc in-dash unit for $400 on ebay. I also have a 10" JL because the bass isn't the best from the console sub.

But replace the head unit with an Alpine, or other good brand, to get more power and a cleaner signal to the speakers.

 

If I have radio controls on my steering wheel, would I still be able to use them on a after market radio?

 

Yes, with an Alpine, and I believe other radios too, you just need a module (about $100). It goes in between the buttons and the radio to translate the signal so the Alpine can read it.
