I sell car audio so I may be slightly bias, but here has been my experience (and optinon of course):
Don't buy anything anyone tells you. Everyone's ears are different, just find what you like. 99% of people out there think that the more "sizzle" there is, the better the speaker (sizzle = clarity? not really but that's what most people think).
Make sure you go to an independent shop, not best buy, circuit city, or ultimate. Those guys (at least around here) don't know their *** from a hole in the wall.
MB Quart - Very popular speakers, tend to be pretty bright (sizzle)
Infinity - Decent for the money, tend to have a hard time producing midbass.
Sony, Clarion, Rockford, Alpine, Eclipse, Kenwood, Audiobahn, and more - Typical japanese speakers. Nothing exceptional average speakers.
Focal - Awesome speakers, no complaints, tend to be a bit pricey.
Diamond Audio - Awesome speakers, this is what I recommend to everyone. Their D3 series (coax and component) sound great for the money and can be run off deck power if need be. (although if you never plan on using an amp I would recommend the coax speakers since they don't have a crossover soaking up power) D6 series sound really good, but I've had some problems with "metal heads" breaking them due to abuse. Hex (this is what i've got) is all around good for the dollar. Retail at 550.00 and sound badass. You have the choice between silk or aluminum tweeters (depends on tweeter location and if you love the sizzle) D9, massive dollars, sound great, but 99.99 percent of people shouldn't spend the extra dollars on them. Most people don't have the ear, or listen to the type of music which would make them worth it.
JL Audio - TR, VR, and XR all sound pretty bad to me. Side by side the Diamond D3 sound better than all of them IMO. The new ZR components do sound great though, but they are a little expensive.
Keep in mind every company has their high and low end speakers. Listen to a bunch, and see what you like. Only take opionions of others if you are torn between a set that you like.

retsell- couldn't lay it out there better myself if i had a week to prepare it. if you get a chance, listen to crystal's sscs and dls's lines also. when things went bad between helix and the importer, i searched and searched for a replacement that was at least that good or better. dls hit the spot. now that helix has a new importer, $ for $ it still doesn't match up to the dls and i won't be picking them back up.
and short circuit, worst buy, etc. are a bunch of moron's out here too. a guy i know, his son went to worst buy and had an alarm put in. they tapped a wire into one of his injector wires. burned a hole in that piston from the injector signal getting grounded out and that cylinder went lean. out of all the horror stories, that's gotta be the worst.

we used to sell rockford, but it was too difficult to justify it to ourselves. The product was just flaky to say the least. The cheap punch amps worked really well (minimal defects) the power amps suck IMO, and all the woofers are terrible to say the least. The "new" line they came out with just sucks. When I saw the product at CES a few years back I was excited because it all looked good, but once you've used it you know...
Let me know if you need anything. I can't make internet sales (breech of contract) and I can't match internet pricing (I have a storefront and overhead, but I can at least offer you a warranty, which they cannot).

I've heard good things about Crytal, but never heard them myself, so I don't know.
I'm not familiar with DLS though... I'll keep my eyes open though.A lot of alarm manufacurers recommend tapping an injector wire for a tach signal. I'm skeptical of it as well and avoid it if at all possible. With these new vehicles though sometimes it's inevitable. Sounds to me like an alarm manufacturer would be picking up the tab on that one...
