Default A/C Intake

Where does the A/C suck in air from? Mine smells like dirt when i turn it on and all i've been able to do is pull the vents out and get in there with a rag and then spray some freshener in them.
Is there a filter I can change or the main section it gets air from that I should clean. I really don't want to pull the dash apart.
